Invitation to the 2026 Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Contest
High school and middle school students nationwide are invited to participate in the 2026 Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Contest, with submissions open from March 16 to June 30, 2026.
Essay Theme Focuses on Critical National Issues
This year’s theme is “Democracy at the Crossroads: Electoral Credibility, Judicial Integrity, and Nigeria’s Future.” Students are encouraged to explore this pressing topic in their essays.
Submission Requirements for Participants
To enter the competition, students must submit an essay of up to 1,200 words that includes the following details: name, address, phone number, grade level, age, school name, principal’s name, and the principal’s contact information. Essays should be emailed to assess@trem.org. Alternatively, hard copies can be delivered to the TREM International Headquarters in Bagada, Lagos.
A Rewarding Opportunity for Winners and Schools
The grand prize includes 800,000 Naira, a laptop, and a shield for the winning student, while the school will receive a desktop computer and a plaque. The second-place winner will take home 400,000 Naira, a laptop, along with similar prizes for their school. This initiative not only motivates students but also enriches educational resources at their institutions.
The Competition’s Purpose and History
Pastor Anthony Samuel from the Corporate Affairs Department of TREM International Headquarters stated that since its inception in 2004, the annual essay competition has aimed to enhance writing skills, inspire critical thinking, and foster discussions around significant national issues. With participation surpassing 20,000 students over the years, the contest serves as a pivotal platform for engaging in intellectual debate.
Establishment Rooted in Social Responsibility
The competition was established as a part of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of Bishop Mike Okonkwo, presiding bishop of the Redeemed Evangelization Mission (TREM). It coincides with his annual birthday celebration, providing Nigerian students a meaningful opportunity to voice their perspectives on key national challenges.
About Bishop Mike Okonkwo’s Impact and Initiatives
With over three decades of dedicated ministry, Bishop Okonkwo has influenced millions through his preaching and leadership of a ministry with more than 180 chapters across Nigeria and ten countries worldwide. Recognized as an apostle for contemporary society, he plays multiple roles as an author, conference speaker, television and radio host, and advocate for a balanced approach to Christianity in Nigeria. Alongside his pastoral efforts, he founded the Empowerment for the Less Privileged (ELP) Foundation, an NGO committed to alleviating hardships faced by marginalized communities through various support programs.
