President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday announced that the new tax law will come into force from January 1, 2026.
The president said in a statement Tuesday night that the new tax law, including the law that will go into effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining laws scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned.
“These reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and strong fiscal foundation for our country,” he said.
“The tax law is not intended to raise taxes, but to help reset structures, promote harmony and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract.
“We urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the realization phase.”
Mr. Tinubu said his administration was aware of the public controversy surrounding the alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax law.

“No serious issues have been established that would justify suspending the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time by making the right decisions, not by premature reactive measures,” the president said.
“I emphasize my administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of the statute. The President is committed to working with Congress to ensure expeditious resolution of identified issues.”
