The Wyoming Immigrant Advocacy Project, based in Jackson, has launched a hotline aimed at reporting and verifying sightings of federal immigration enforcement agents throughout the Teton area. This initiative comes as a response to growing concerns among immigrant communities in the region.
Community Support through Trained Volunteers
Volunteers associated with the Teton Area Rapid Response Network will respond to calls regarding potential immigration enforcement activity. Dressed in blue vests featuring a butterfly logo, these trained individuals are part of a broader national grassroots movement focused on supporting immigrants and their communities with essential resources, including food, housing, and legal education.
Transparency in Immigration Practices Needed
Emily Gomez, executive director of the Wyoming Immigrant Advocacy Project, emphasized the necessity of such networks, stating that if transparency and accountability were standard in immigration practices, initiatives like theirs would be unnecessary. The team aims to provide accurate information to dispel fears and uncertainties within the community.
Real-Time Community Updates on ICE Activity
Once a volunteer verifies the presence of immigration enforcement officers, they will keep the community informed through social media and public message boards. The initiative intends to reduce misinformation and prepare residents for any ICE operations in the area.
Increased Federal Presence Heightens Anxiety
Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr reported that federal agents have regularly operated at the Teton County Jail, apprehending multiple undocumented immigrants weekly over the past year. Although ICE sightings have been limited, the presence of federal vehicles often ignites community discussions, exacerbating anxiety and uncertainty among residents.

While monitors are instructed to avoid interfering with law enforcement activities, Community Response Coordinator Vanessa Chavarriaga expressed hope that their presence will serve as a reminder of the rights immigrants hold during encounters with ICE officials. The objective is to cultivate a sense of security amidst the growing tension surrounding immigration enforcement.

Since the onset of the current administration, concerns regarding immigration enforcement have intensified, leading to widespread anxiety within the Latinx community. Rumors about ICE activity have circulated, contributing to diminishing attendance at community events, such as county fairs. Gomez highlighted the necessity of their response network in light of the government’s ambiguous and aggressive stance on immigration policy.

Earlier this year, unsettling news emerged with a leaked memo from the Department of Homeland Security indicating a shift away from the requirement that federal agents secure a judicial warrant before entering private spaces. However, in March, Senator Markwayne Mullin, a nominee for the Department of Homeland Security, expressed his intention to uphold the constitutional requirement for judicial warrants, challenging the previous policy implemented by his predecessor, Kristi Noem.
