Commitment to Timely Rescue Operations
Authorities are focusing on the urgent rescue of victims in ongoing kidnapping cases across Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu has condemned the recent murder of a teacher abducted from the Eshiele community in Oyo State, calling the act barbaric. He has assured the public that security forces are working relentlessly to capture the perpetrators and bring the hostages home safely.
Government Response to Abductions
Last Friday, armed bandits attacked the Eshiele community in Oyo State, abducting students and staff from various schools, including the Community Grammar School and several primary institutions. In a statement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga emphasized that security forces are implementing a round-the-clock operation aimed at rescuing the victims and arresting those responsible.
Federal and State Collaboration on Security Measures
President Tinubu expressed his condolences to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the families affected by the abduction. He commended local police for their swift response and highlighted ongoing efforts led by the Inspector-General of Police. The President called for legislative action to establish state police in underserved areas, emphasizing the urgency brought about by rising kidnapping incidents.
Oyo State Government’s Stance on Kidnapping
Governor Seyi Makinde reiterated Oyo State’s commitment to responding appropriately to the kidnappers while refusing to succumb to terrorism. He stated that meeting the abductors’ demands would be contingent upon the safe and timely return of the victims. Makinde confirmed that a total of 25 individuals, including students and teachers, had been kidnapped from multiple schools during the attack.
Operational Updates and Ongoing Challenges
During a press briefing, Governor Makinde characterized the operational atmosphere as “fluid and difficult,” urging responsible media coverage. He announced the establishment of an operations center at the Oyo State Police Headquarters to disseminate accurate information on ongoing rescue efforts. In an effort to enhance security, he revealed that two surveillance aircraft acquired by the state have arrived and are set to be operational by the end of June.
Senators Call for Urgent Action on Student Safety
The Northern Senators Forum has denounced the abduction of 42 students from a school in Borno State, drawing parallels to the tragic Chibok abduction of 2014. The Forum’s Chairman, Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, urged immediate action from federal authorities and security agencies to ensure the quick and safe rescue of the affected students, citing the attack as a serious violation of children’s rights to education.
Joint Military Operations Against Terrorism
In a significant development, Nigerian and US military forces executed a coordinated operation that resulted in the neutralization of over 20 ISIS/ISWAP militants in northeastern Nigeria. Maj. Gen. Samaira Uba, Director of Defense Intelligence, confirmed that additional airstrikes targeted terrorist camps, marking an important stride in the ongoing efforts to disrupt the operational capabilities of extremist groups within the region.
