Trump Strengthens Campaign Influence But Faces Setbacks in Congress
Analysis by Kristen Welker
Over the past week, President Donald Trump has bolstered his influence among Republican primary voters by dismissing two veteran Congress members who have opposed him. Despite this political maneuvering, however, his legislative agenda continues to face hurdles in the second term.
Earlier this week, Trump celebrated successes when candidates he endorsed defeated Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, both of whom had previously defied the White House on critical issues. In a bid to further assert his power, Trump also endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Senator John Cornyn in the state’s primary runoff.
Yet, these outcomes did little to alleviate significant opposition within Congress. Following his defeat, Cassidy sided with a resolution to end the war with Iran, prompting House Republicans to postpone a similar vote as it appeared likely to pass. This illustrates a growing rift between Trump’s base and establishment Republicans.
Resistance from Cassidy and others seeking funding for the administration’s $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, in addition to another billion for security measures for a new White House banquet hall, has led to stalled votes on crucial packages aimed at funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol.
This dynamic represents an unintended consequence of Trump’s retaliatory approach. While he has tightened control over the party’s base, he may be alienating Republicans less inclined to support his policies. The ongoing battle between Trump’s base and Congressional priorities promises to be contentious.
We will delve deeper into these developments this Sunday on “Meet the Press,” featuring an exclusive interview with Representative Massey and insights from Representative Ro Khanna, D-Calif.

Tulsi Gabbard Resigns from Role as Director of National Intelligence
Written by Dan De Ruth, Garrett Haak, Kelly O’Donnell
Tulsi Gabbard, a prominent figure in the U.S. intelligence community, is resigning from her position following her husband’s cancer diagnosis. In a letter to President Trump, she expressed her need to step back to provide support during this challenging time, specifying her last day would be June 30th.
Trump acknowledged her contributions, stating that she “did a great job” and expressed hope for her husband’s swift recovery. Gabbard’s resignation marks her as the fourth cabinet member to depart the Trump administration, joining three other women in similar circumstances amid various controversies.
Unlike her predecessors, Gabbard did not face removal from her role. However, speculation had surrounded her future for months, particularly given her less enthusiastic backing of the administration’s military strategies. During key decision-making moments, she often remained absent, highlighting her outsider status within the administration.
Throughout her tenure, she has had contentious interactions with higher-ups, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe. Despite pressure from allies to resign after shifts within the administration, Gabbard remained steadfast until her husband’s health crisis necessitated this significant personal decision.
