ABSG Commits to Developing Electricity Markets in Abia State
The Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA) recently hosted a public consultation aimed at gathering input from electricity consumers and stakeholders regarding a draft regulation. This regulation is a crucial step towards enabling ASERA to effectively fulfill the objectives outlined by the Abia State Government in the power sector. This discussion took place on Thursday at Sun Haven Hotels in Umuahia, as noted by Mr. Ikechukwu, the Commissioner for Power and Public Works.
Commitment to a World-Class Electricity Market
During the event, Mr. Ikechukwu emphasized the commitment of Governor Otti’s administration to constructing a world-class electricity market that caters to all residents of Abia State. He highlighted that this consultation reflects the government’s dedication to transparency as it seeks to enhance the state’s electricity market.
Customer-Centric Approach
“Today’s event underscores our transparency efforts as we develop a robust electricity market,” Mr. Ikechukwu stated. He reiterated that a paramount objective, as directed by Governor Alex Otti, is to create an electricity market where every participant, particularly consumers, plays a pivotal role. “The customer is not just a key player; they are an essential stakeholder in our initiatives,” he affirmed.
Engagement with Consumers
Mr. Ikechukwu commended ASERA’s efforts in formulating draft regulations while stressing the importance of consumer feedback. Engaging consumers is vital to the administration’s goal of providing reliable electricity, which is essential for socio-economic development in the region.
Progress in Meter Deployment
Representatives from Aba Power and Geometric Group reported the successful installation of over 120,000 meters in households within their coverage area over the past six months. They plan to extend similar efforts to other local government areas, marking significant strides toward improving electricity access.
Public Engagement Key to Efficiency
Sam Amadi, Chairman of the Abia State Electricity Advisory Council, pointed out that effective public engagement is crucial for enhancing electricity service delivery. He emphasized the need to foster consumer confidence in regulatory decisions and to ensure fair resolution of customer complaints.
Regulatory Framework for Sustainable Growth
In his opening remarks, ASERA Chairman Emeka Igwebuike reaffirmed that the public consultation is meant to facilitate collaboration and transparency in regulatory processes. He underscored the importance of accommodating input from stakeholders, which will ultimately lead to regulations that guide operators, service providers, and consumers effectively.
Legal Framework Supporting Market Development
Mr. Igwebuike highlighted the significance of the Electricity Bill and the Electricity Act of 2023, which lay the groundwork for establishing a regulatory framework for sub-national electricity markets in Abia State. As ASERA assumes its role as the statutory regulator, it aims to cultivate a market that attracts investments and prioritizes customer satisfaction, thus supporting economic growth throughout the state.
Supporting Decentralized Power Sector Initiatives
Mr. Odion Omonfoman, Principal Consultant on Electricity for the Nigeria Governors Forum, praised the establishment of ASERA as a significant advancement for the Abia electricity market. He pointed out that the success of this initiative relies heavily on robust regulations that protect consumers while ensuring commercial viability. Omonfoman commended ASERA for its proactive and transparent approach in fulfilling its responsibilities under the Electricity Act and stressed the importance of inclusive governance within the electricity market.
