Louise Torte, Managing Director, Westcon Comstar Southern Africa.
Westcon-Comstor, a global technology distributor specializing in cybersecurity, networking, and hybrid cloud solutions, has proudly reaffirmed its Level 1 status in the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) assessment. This achievement underscores the company’s ongoing commitment to transformation, inclusive economic participation, and sustainable growth within South Africa’s technology sector.
The country’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector is grappling with a significant talent shortage. Recent findings from Xpatweb’s 2025 Critical Skills Survey, conducted in collaboration with the Home Office and the Department for Higher Education and Training, reveal that the percentage of companies reporting a lack of ICT specialists has surged from 10% to 22% in just two years.
For Westcon-Comstor, which prioritizes the cultivation of local ICT talent, these statistics make the company’s Level 1 achievement even more significant. This status reflects the firm’s dedication to embedding substantial change in its operations, enhancing workforce development, broadening its partner ecosystem, and actively contributing to local economic progress.
Louise Torte, managing director of Westcon-Comstor Southern Africa, emphasized that transformation is a fundamental aspect of their business model. “This journey encompasses our operational strategies, partner collaborations, and our commitment to generating opportunities throughout the ICT landscape. Sustaining our Level 1 status year after year is crucial as it exemplifies our consistency, accountability, and long-term dedication to these values,” she noted.
Investment in Local Initiatives Drives Change
A key component of Westcon-Comstor’s strategy revolves around empowering partners. This includes enablement, skills development, market access, and support for business growth—particularly for established partners and emerging black-owned ICT businesses aspiring to thrive in competitive environments.
The firm is also committed to enhancing supplier and enterprise growth by implementing procurement practices that favor Qualified Small Enterprises (QSEs), Exempted Micro Enterprises (EMEs), and empowered local suppliers. This approach not only strengthens the supply chain but also fosters regional economic participation and resilience through sustainable supplier relationships. Beyond procurement, Westcon-Comstor actively engages in community development initiatives aimed at creating broader social and economic opportunities where it operates.
Skill development remains a central focus for the company as well. Westcon-Comstor continues to invest in diverse training programs and continuous professional development to equip future professionals with the skills needed to adapt to the rapidly evolving demands of the ICT sector. The pronounced skills deficit in South Africa has emerged as a critical hurdle, with 84% of large companies facing challenges in recruiting qualified personnel, particularly in high-demand areas such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
“We believe that genuine transformation must translate into real opportunities for individuals,” Torte asserted. “This entails creating pathways into the ICT industry, investing in skills development, and supporting individuals in building sustainable careers in technology.”
Commitment to Future Investments Remains Strong
As the discussion around transformation and compliance evolves, Torte emphasized that South Africa’s ICT sector must prioritize action over debate. “The skills gap is a pressing reality, the demand is urgent, and organizations like ours are responsible for establishing a pipeline of sustainable opportunities. Our Level 1 status signifies this commitment and outlines the path we intend to continue traversing,” she concluded.
Westcon-Comstor is unwavering in its focus on empowering partners, supporting local suppliers, investing in skills development, and driving initiatives that make a positive impact on both the community and the broader industry.
