Barcelona Secures Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United
Barcelona has finalized the acquisition of English forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, securing him on a five-year contract. The initial transfer fee is set at 70 million euros (approximately $81.7 million), which could rise to over 80 million euros (around $93.3 million) contingent on performance-related add-ons, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
Interest from Major Competitors
The Catalan club acted swiftly to bring Gordon on board this week, fending off interest from prominent rivals including Bayern Munich and Liverpool, who were also keen on the talented 25-year-old striker.
Rapid Agreement Achieved
ESPN reported that Barça and Newcastle reached an agreement on the transfer terms, leading to Gordon traveling to Catalonia for a medical examination shortly thereafter. In a brief introductory statement, Gordon expressed his excitement about joining the club, stating, “This is the greatest club on the planet. It’s a dream come true to be here.”
Embracing Responsibility
During his unveiling, Gordon acknowledged the weight of entering such a storied club, emphasizing his readiness to embrace the challenges ahead. He remarked, “I know all the players who have worn this shirt in the past. It’s a lot of weight, but I’m ready and excited for the challenge.”
Language Preparedness and Team Integration
Gordon’s first public appearance as a Barça player was delayed by more than eight hours due to administrative issues; nevertheless, he impressed the audience by answering questions in Spanish. He noted his commitment to learning the language, having anticipated this moment since childhood. “I told my physiotherapist in Newcastle that I wanted to learn Spanish because I dreamt of playing for Barça one day,” he shared.
World Cup Expectations
Gordon has been selected for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad of 26 players and will travel to the United States for the upcoming World Cup. His arrival at Barcelona is part of a broader offensive revamp mandated by manager Hansi Flick. Gordon primarily occupies the left wing but is versatile enough to operate centrally, adding depth to a forward line that already features talents like Lamine Yamal and Rafinha.
Future Ambitions with Barça
Looking ahead, Gordon expressed his eagerness to collaborate with top-tier teammates: “I think the more quality players you have around you, the better you become. Winning something with Barça is very special for me, especially the Champions League.” He further noted, “I want to win all trophies, but winning the club’s sixth European Cup would be an iconic moment.”
Barcelona’s Search for a Striker Continues
As FC Barcelona’s reshaping continues, the club is also on the lookout for a central striker following Robert Lewandowski’s announcement of his departure at the end of his contract in June. Reports suggest that following Gordon’s acquisition, the club’s attention has turned towards Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, whose market value exceeds 100 million euros.
Complicating matters is the potential impact on another England international, Marcus Rashford. Barcelona retains an option to acquire Rashford for 30 million euros this summer, after a productive loan spell at Spotify Camp Nou where he netted 14 goals and provided 14 assists. Sources indicate that Gordon’s arrival does not preclude Rashford’s return, with Barça keen to negotiate a favorable deal with Manchester United.
Gordon’s journey to this point began in the youth academies of Liverpool and Everton, followed by a loan stint at Preston North End. He later established himself in Everton’s first team and joined Newcastle in 2023 for a deal reported to be worth up to €50 million, tallying 39 goals in 152 appearances over just over three seasons.
