ACLU Files Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over Immigrant Detention Conditions
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has initiated legal action against the Trump administration, claiming that conditions at the Camp East Montana detention facility amount to a “civil rights disaster.” This facility, reportedly characterized by “inhumane” treatment, has drawn the ire of multiple civil rights organizations involved in the lawsuit.
Allegations of Inhumane Treatment
The lawsuit outlines a variety of serious complaints against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including instances of physical abuse, sexual harassment, substandard medical care, spoiled food, and excessive use of force. With approximately 5,000 beds, Camp East Montana is the largest immigration detention center in the U.S., established shortly after the Trump administration ramped up its immigration enforcement efforts.
Flagrant Human Rights Abuses Reported
According to the complaint, in just ten months of operation, the facility has garnered a reputation for severe human rights violations. Detainees are reportedly confined to windowless tents and face brutal treatment from guards, including inadequate medical and psychiatric care for chronic conditions like cancer and HIV. Furthermore, the use of solitary confinement as punishment has been flagged as a key concern, exposing detainees to serious health risks, including outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Department of Homeland Security’s Response
In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, asserted that all detainees at Camp East Montana have access to medical care. The spokesperson emphasized longstanding practices to ensure comprehensive medical evaluations shortly after detainees arrive at the facility.
Concerns Over Deaths at the Facility
The complaint also highlights three deaths at the facility, including that of a Cuban immigrant whose death was ruled a homicide by local authorities. Eyewitness accounts suggest a pattern of negligence, claiming that staff refused to administer necessary medication, contributing to the circumstances surrounding the death.
Sexual Assault and Harassment Allegations
Moreover, the ACLU alleges that detainees have faced sexual abuse from guards, highlighting incidents where staff members engaged in non-consensual sexual contact. The complaint details how one detained individual reported being sexually assaulted in the presence of other guards and subsequently faced harassment even after formally reporting the incident.
Conditions Contribute to Health Risks
The conditions in and around the tents are cited as contributing factors to respiratory illnesses among detainees, with the lawsuit criticizing DHS for partnering with private contractors lacking relevant experience in detention management. In April, DHS announced it had contracted a new operator for the facility, and expressed commitment to ongoing improvements.
Inspection Violations Highlight Safety Concerns
ICE’s internal review earlier this year revealed multiple safety violations, particularly concerning the use of force, leading to further scrutiny of practices at Camp East Montana. Despite these findings, DHS claims that they are dedicated to ensuring that all detained individuals receive adequate care, aligning with high detention standards.
