Concerns Rise Over Alleged Misappropriation of Security Funds in Kogi State
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Center (CISLAC) and Transparency International (TI) Nigeria have raised alarms over significant financial intelligence findings that suggest approximately N36.9 billion may have been diverted from security-related accounts in Kogi State. This troubling development has prompted both organizations to call for urgent investigations.
Their apprehensions stem from years of advocacy aimed at fostering transparency and accountability in the management of security funds and intervention programs across Nigeria. These organizations have dedicated over a decade to scrutinizing the administration of security votes at both federal and state levels, highlighting persistent weaknesses in oversight mechanisms.
CISLAC Executive Director Awwal Ibrahim Musa, who also heads Transparency International Nigeria, emphasized their longstanding concerns regarding the lack of transparency and effective oversight in the management of security funding. “Our findings over many years have uncovered systemic vulnerabilities that enable the diversion and misappropriation of public resources under the guise of security spending,” he noted.
According to the financial data assessed by CISLAC and TI Nigeria, the Kogi State Security Operations Account reportedly received over N36.9 billion from the Kogi State Government’s State Revenue Account (SRA) within just nine months. Alarmingly, a substantial portion of these funds appears to have been funneled into various accounts, some of which are allegedly linked to private companies.
In response to these revelations, CISLAC and TI Nigeria are urging relevant anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to undertake a thorough forensic investigation into the financial inflows and outflows associated with the accounts in question. They have also called for a detailed inquiry into Real Striker Finance Limited to assess its ownership structure, business activities, and all transactions believed to be related to the company.
The organizations insist on the need for transparency in identifying and publishing all ultimate beneficiaries of the diverted funds. They advocate for the recovery of any public assets misappropriated and the prosecution of individuals and entities implicated, irrespective of their political connections.
CISLAC and TI Nigeria argue that the lack of clarity surrounding security votes severely undermines public trust and hampers efforts to combat corruption in the country. They urge authorities to enhance the transparency and accountability framework governing security expenditures nationwide.
As of the time this report was drafted, the Kogi State government had not released an official statement addressing the allegations raised by CISLAC and Transparency International Nigeria.
