Nigeria Pursues Direct Cargo Flights to Boost Local Trade
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that Nigeria is in discussions to establish direct cargo flight operations between China and the South East, specifically via Enugu. The initiative aims to commence operations by the end of the year.
During a recent ceremony marking the introduction of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft acquired by United Nigeria Airlines, Keyamo revealed that he had been actively negotiating with the Enugu State Governor for the inaugural direct cargo flight from Guangzhou, China, to Enugu, scheduled for December. This flight will allow merchants in southeastern China to consolidate their goods more efficiently, with plans for bi-weekly service directly into Enugu, facilitating smooth delivery to major hubs such as Onitsha and Aba.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to enhance trade logistics and invigorate commercial activities throughout the region. Keyamo emphasized that repositioning Enugu International Airport as a cargo hub is a critical aspect of their strategy, aiming to involve private sector participation in its operations.
Enugu International Airport Set for Transformation
Keyamo highlighted the potential of Enugu International Airport, noting that the state government had approached the President for permission to attract private investment to enhance its economic viability. In response, the President authorized this initiative, which has resulted in the airport now being fully managed by private operators under state government oversight. The objective is to develop it into a dedicated cargo hub that serves the entire South East region.
Advancements at Abia State International Airport
Keyamo also discussed the progress of ongoing construction at Abia State International Airport in Umuahia. What began as a modest airstrip is being developed into a functional international airport, with federal approval and significantly increased funding from the state government.
“Upon taking office, my first action was to raise the issue of Abia’s lack of an airstrip with the President, who was surprised. As a result, the project was prioritized in the 2024 budget,” Keyamo stated. He acknowledged that the Abia State government has been instrumental by enhancing its financial contribution to the project’s development.
Governor Alex Otti has expressed hope that United Nigeria Airlines will establish its primary operational base at the airport upon its completion, which would further bolster the region’s aviation infrastructure.
Strengthening Domestic Airlines and International Flight Access
Furthermore, Keyamo revealed that the federal government is implementing initiatives to fortify domestic airlines and broaden access to international flights. “We are offering United Nigeria Airlines promising routes to destinations including New York, Canada, and Dubai. Currently, we are in pursuit of additional aircraft to operate these routes,” he noted.
Keyamo also shared that the government has endorsed the creation of a government-backed leasing company to facilitate aircraft procurement for local carriers. “I advocated for a solution to the international leasing challenges faced by our airlines during my visit to the President. He has formally approved the establishment of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company,” he concluded.
This new entity will operate under government guarantees to secure aircraft through private dry lease agreements, which will subsequently be subleased directly to domestic airlines. Preparations for this initiative are already underway, signaling a proactive approach to enhancing Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
