First Lady Urges Wealthy Nigerians to Support Charitable Initiatives
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Nigeria’s President, has urged affluent Nigerians, particularly notable musicians like Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake, to direct portions of their wealth into charitable foundations aimed at assisting the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
Call for Community Support at Food Bank Launch
Speaking at the inauguration of the North Central State Community Food Bank in Lokoja, Kogi State, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted the significant challenges faced by the government and emphasized the importance of private contributions to charitable endeavors. She remarked, “We have many wealthy individuals, yet our priorities seem to differ. It’s time to start extending assistance to those in need within our communities.”
Philanthropy Among Entertainers
The First Lady referenced international role models in the entertainment industry who successfully integrate philanthropy into their careers. She expressed a desire to see similar initiatives fostered in Nigeria, stating, “Artists like Burna Boy, Asake, and Davido have the means to support the impoverished through their foundations.”
Acknowledging Small Business Contributions
Mrs. Tinubu also addressed the societal bias against modest professions, recounting the story of a university graduate who resorted to street vending after struggling to secure formal employment. With assistance, this individual now provides jobs for twelve people. “Our society should never belittle small enterprises,” she asserted.
Financial Support for Small Traders
During the event, she announced a donation of an additional N100 million from the Renewed Hope Initiative to the First Lady of Kogi State, along with N50,000 each for 2,000 small traders. She commended the beneficiaries for their entrepreneurial spirit, exemplified by the simple offerings of pepper, okra, and tomatoes they presented during her visit.
Addressing Food Security and Malnutrition
Mrs. Tinubu characterized the food bank initiative as a targeted solution to combat insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households in Nigeria. She emphasized that the program is designed to provide access to nutritious food for vulnerable children under the age of six, pregnant women, and nursing mothers, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s New Hope Agenda aimed at enhancing food security and health outcomes.
Engagement with Traditional Leaders
In a subsequent meeting with traditional rulers and chiefs in Kogi State, she encouraged them to advocate for the national food bank program, ensuring it effectively reaches its intended beneficiaries—particularly children and mothers facing hardship. Mrs. Tinubu committed that the Renewed Hope Initiative would persist in its mission to elevate the quality of life for Nigerian families.
Support from the State Governor
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo praised the First Lady’s various initiatives across the country as a reflection of her sincerity and genuine commitment to positively influencing the lives of ordinary Nigerians. He urged the President to continue his efforts to restore Nigeria’s economic stability, recognizing him as a leader who has leveraged his privilege to rehabilitate an economy on the brink of collapse.
