Cross River State Launches Campaign Against Pre-Eclampsia
Cross River State has initiated a week-long campaign aimed at raising awareness about pre-eclampsia and addressing the critical issue of maternal and newborn mortality in the region. This initiative is spearheaded by the Cross River State Chapter of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Nigeria (SOGON) and is themed “Pre-eclampsia: The unexpected enemy at your doorstep.”
Healthcare Standards Must Not Waver
During the program’s launch on Thursday, Dr. Dan Abubakar, Chairman of the Cross River State Task Force on Healthcare Quality and Anti-Quackery, urged healthcare professionals to uphold their standards despite the ongoing economic challenges. He underscored the pressing need for vigilance in addressing pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy-related condition marked by high blood pressure and potential organ dysfunction, which is among the leading causes of maternal and neonatal mortality worldwide.
Critical Importance of Early Detection and Treatment
Dr. Abubakar emphasized that early detection, timely intervention, and access to quality obstetric care are vital in preventing unnecessary fatalities and complications associated with this condition. His remarks highlighted the global significance of addressing pre-eclampsia effectively to save lives.
Challenges Amid Economic Constraints
Acknowledging the heightened strain on healthcare services during this economic downturn, Dr. Abubakar reiterated that safeguarding patient safety must always take precedence. He pointed out the challenges faced by healthcare providers, while affirming the continued necessity of delivering high-quality health services despite these obstacles.
Government Commitment to Maternal Health
In his address, State Health Commissioner Dr. Henry Ayuk reinforced the commitment of Governor Bassey Otu’s administration to securing the health of mothers and newborns. He highlighted that enhancing maternal health is a cornerstone of the government’s People First Agenda. Dr. Ayuk noted that the Ministry of Health is actively implementing comprehensive reforms designed to revitalize healthcare facilities, bolster service delivery, and ensure women have access to essential maternal health services.
Adopting a Modern Approach to Healthcare
Dr. Ayuk stressed that improving maternal health goes beyond clinical expertise; it is also about developing strong regulatory frameworks and modern health infrastructures. He outlined that Cross River State University is embracing a digital transformation in healthcare, integrating advanced medical management systems, improving infrastructure, and standardizing procedures across all 18 local governments.
Enhancing Public Awareness and Policy Action
The week-long campaign aims to broaden public understanding of the risks associated with pre-eclampsia while fostering collaboration among health professionals. It seeks to stimulate policy efforts dedicated to enhancing maternal and newborn health throughout Cross River State. The initiative is expected to make significant strides in addressing these critical health issues and enhancing the wellbeing of families in the region.
