eTranzact Platform Enhances Revenue Collection in Jigawa State
The Jigawa State government has launched an initiative to digitize revenue collection in livestock and grain markets, transport operations, and various informal sector activities. This effort aims to curb revenue leakages, enhance accountability, and boost internal revenue generation.
Implemented by eTranzact International Plc in partnership with the Jigawa Inland Revenue Service (JIRS), the new initiative is set to replace traditional methods of revenue collection with an electronic system that allows for real-time tracking of transactions. This system will ensure that revenue is directly remitted to specified government accounts, significantly improving transparency.
The digital revenue collection platform was introduced on Wednesday in Dutse, the state capital, during a stakeholder engagement and capacity-building program. This event welcomed over 90 revenue collectors, market leaders, and key stakeholders who are instrumental to the initiative’s success.
This deployment coincides with a nationwide push by governments to enhance domestic revenue mobilization while decreasing reliance on statutory allocations. As demands for public services rise, there is an urgent need for more effective funding mechanisms.
Under the new system, revenue collection for essential informal sector activities will utilize various electronic channels such as mobile wallets and point-of-sale (POS) terminals. This change will enable transactions to be recorded, monitored, and reconciled electronically, streamlining the entire process.
At the unveiling event, Gabriel Essien, Deputy General Manager and Head of Public Sector (States) at eTranzact International, emphasized the transformative potential of the platform for state revenue management. He highlighted that the technology provides real-time visibility into collections, eradicates revenue leakage, and generates reliable data crucial for effective government planning and decision-making.
Essien also remarked on the platform’s capacity to grant governments greater control over revenue flows, simplifying payments for taxpayers. Nwabueze Ugwu, the North West Regional Manager at eTranzact International, added that the solution was developed following extensive consultations with stakeholders to tackle the unique challenges faced in collecting revenue from the informal sector.
According to Ugwu, the platform offers end-to-end automation that simplifies revenue management while enhancing accountability throughout the collection process. He expressed confidence that the elimination of manual procedures would help public authorities maximize revenue and improve service delivery.
Dr. Nasir Sabo Idris, Executive Chairman of JIRS, stated that this initiative represents a significant addition to the state’s tax reform and digital transformation strategies. He noted that the platform would enhance compliance, minimize revenue leakage, and equip revenue professionals with modern tools for their responsibilities.
As local governments face mounting pressure to fund infrastructure, social services, and development programs from stable and transparent sources, this deployment marks a critical step toward strengthening domestically generated revenue in Jigawa State. A live demonstration of the platform during the event showcased its electronic payment capabilities, user-friendly interface, and real-time reporting functionalities, further solidifying its potential impact on public sector revenue management.
The implementation in Jigawa also extends eTranzact’s commitment to digital transformation in the public sector, illustrating its role in reshaping how governments manage revenue.
