Rapid Growth Amidst a Small Base
Currently, Africa boasts a developer community of roughly 4.7 million, which pales in comparison to Asia’s 73.9 million and Europe’s 27.5 million. However, the continent is experiencing an impressive annual growth rate of 21% from 2019 to 2024, outpacing all other regions. This acceleration underscores the vast economic potential that African nations can harness by cultivating local digital talent and enhancing their global competitiveness.
Factors Behind the Surge
BCG attributes this rapid expansion to several structural factors, including a youthful demographic, rising internet access, the emergence of urban tech hubs, and intentional national policies focusing on digital capacity building. Countries like Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt continue to lead in terms of developer numbers, reflecting robust technology ecosystems, while emerging markets such as Kenya, Tunisia, and Morocco are gaining momentum through sustained investment in education and innovation.
Emerging Markets Face Gender Disparities
Despite the surge in developer numbers, the report highlights a critical challenge: significant gender disparities within Africa’s developer ecosystem. Women remain largely underrepresented, which limits the continent’s ability to fully leverage its rich talent pool. Tunisia exemplifies progress in this area, with women constituting 24% of developers in 2024, the highest percentage on the continent. In contrast, major markets like Morocco and Egypt report female representation below 14%.

Countries that prioritize inclusive education, robust research networks, and supportive innovation environments tend to outperform others in diversity and developer community growth.
