Airtel Africa Announces Leadership Transition Amid Board Succession Plan
Airtel Africa, the London-listed telecommunications firm operating mobile and financial services across 14 African nations, revealed on Wednesday that its chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, will resign in July. He will be succeeded by Gopal Vitthal, an experienced industry figure and current chairman of GSMA.
The transition will take place following the company’s annual general meeting in July 2026. This change is part of a comprehensive board succession strategy aimed at ensuring consistent governance and long-term leadership stability as Airtel Africa continues to grow its communication and mobile money services.
Mittal, who founded Bharti Enterprises, has chaired Airtel Africa since its debut on the London Stock Exchange in 2019. He has led the company through significant phases since its acquisition in 2010, transforming it into a member of the FTSE 100 and guiding its expansion across the continent.
In a statement, Mittal expressed pride in leading Airtel Africa, highlighting the company’s robust strategic foundation and strong leadership team. He affirmed that the decision to step down was timely, given the company’s promising trajectory and commitment to offering connectivity solutions to millions of customers in Africa.
Taking over as non-executive chairman will be Gopal Vitthal, who is currently the Executive Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel and Chairman of the GSMA Board. Vitthal joined Airtel Africa’s board as a non-executive director in October 2024, equipped with extensive telecommunications experience after successfully navigating Bharti Airtel through India’s competitive market.
Vitthal’s appointment was made in accordance with the 2019 Relationship Agreement, governed by the shareholder dynamics between Airtel Africa, Bharti Airtel, Airtel Africa Mauritius Limited, and Bharti Telecom. The board noted that, due to the nature of his appointment, he will not be regarded as an independent member per the UK Corporate Governance Code.
Additionally, Shravin Bharti Mittal will assume the role of vice chairman in July, representing key shareholders and serving as a liaison between the Airtel Money Board of Directors and Airtel Africa’s Dubai headquarters. As part of the planned succession, non-executive director Annika Poutainen will step down at the shareholders’ meeting after over seven years with the company.
Senior Independent Director Tsega Ghebreyesus commended Mittal for his leadership during pivotal moments in Airtel Africa’s evolution as a major force in the global telecommunications landscape. Meanwhile, Airtel Africa’s shares (AAF.L) experienced a boost, closing at 361.00 pence, reflecting a 1.8% increase on Tuesday.
