Glen Rovers Triumphs in Midnight All Weather Easter Classic
Glen Rovers delivered a stunning performance in the Midnight All Weather Easter Classic Middle Distance Handicap at Newcastle, achieving an impressive victory with odds of 33-1. With a prize purse of ÂŁ175,000, the race attracted a competitive lineup, including a formidable challenger from Willie Mullins’ renowned stable, Gaucher. Ridden by champion all-weather jockey Billy Loughnane, Glen Rovers showcased exceptional stamina and skill.
As Glen Rovers approached the final furlong, it seemed he had the race in hand. However, Sean D. Bowen, a rising star and 2024 Champion Disciple, remained composed and engaged in a thrilling challenge that culminated in a half-length win. The horse is trained by Lucy Wadham, known for her expertise in handling jump racers, further enhancing the horse’s promising career.
Dedicated co-owner Connor Ryan, who works alongside Charlie Appleby, celebrated what he described as the best day of his life. Reflecting on the hurdles faced over the years, Ryan acknowledged the challenges of training Glen Rovers but praised Wadham and her team for their commitment. “This season he has been productive, overcoming minor issues and building his fitness,” Ryan remarked. They had confidence heading into the race, knowing that the distance and conditions were favorable, and highlighting how Glen Rovers has changed their lives through his success.
Bowen spoke highly of the horse’s potential, noting his impressive performance. “With just over three furlongs to go, I knew I had to take him off the horse in front of me. That’s when I realized I had a real chance,” Bowen stated, emphasizing the critical moment that defined the race.
Tyrrhenian Sea Claims Victory in Mile Handicap
Tyrrhenian Sea proved his enduring prowess in the all-weather circuit with a brilliant victory in the Mile Handicap at the BetMGM All-Weather Championship in Newcastle. At eight years old, he continues to demonstrate remarkable speed, showcasing a powerful turn of foot despite facing younger competitors. Since his debut win at Gosforth Park in December 2021, Tyrrhenian Sea has secured 17 of his 24 career races on artificial surfaces.
With two wins at Listed level, his journey has included notable performances, including a second-place finish in the Chancellor Stakes. In this race, the competition was fierce, but he edged out Blue Rc, finishing a length and a quarter ahead. Jockey Jack Mitchell, who has ridden him more times than any other jockey, expressed his emotional connection to the horse. “As he competes against younger horses, it was crucial for him to be at his absolute best today,” Mitchell said.
In a strategic move, Mitchell navigated the race carefully, pushing Tyrrhenian Sea past the 14 draw and gaining momentum to secure the win. “After a thorough discussion with Roger and the team, we felt we were a few pounds better than Chancellor in this race. His best form is all-weather, and if he stays fit, we can anticipate future successes,” Mitchell added.
Stateira Shines in the Mares Championship Handicap
Andrew Balding’s Stateira was expected to shine and did not disappoint, fulfilling her role as the 11-8 favorite in BetMGM’s Mares Championship Handicap. Following a successful trial meeting 72 days prior, Balding opted to prepare her for this ÂŁ150,000 final, resulting in a rewarding race. Despite carrying 10 pounds more than before, jockey Oisin Murphy rode with confidence, looking poised for a robust performance.
“She deserved to be the favorite, though I was a bit concerned about her tendency to dictate the pace,” Murphy shared. The strategy paid off as Stateira calmed down and ultimately excelled in the race. Observing her health and potential for improvement, Murphy acknowledged that she could continue to rise through the ranks.
William Haggas’ Wiltshire, previously seen as a strong contender in the Midnight All-Weather Sprint Handicap, faced challenges but rebounded impressively. Despite initial setbacks, he transformed his performance thanks to jockey Shielen Fallon, who guided him to victory by a length over Five Thousand Toon. Haggas’ wife and assistant, Maureen, noted Wiltshire’s growing comfort and confidence, especially following a successful surgery to address a health issue. “With a newfound ease, he displayed the talent we’ve always known he possesses,” she remarked.
