Federal Government Commits to Combating Terrorism Following Maiduguri Attack
The federal government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to confront those responsible for the recent wave of attacks across the country, particularly in Maiduguri. Vice President Kassim Shettima made this declaration during a visit to Borno State, where he was accompanied by Zubaydah Umar, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The visit came in the wake of multiple explosions in Maiduguri that left more than 100 people injured and resulted in over 20 fatalities.
Shettima outlined a series of presidential directives aimed at bolstering counter-terrorism operations within the region. He mandated security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri and take immediate command of the response efforts. The Vice President announced that the federal government is investing in new equipment and logistics to enhance military operations against terrorism across Nigeria.
Condemning the violent incidents in Maiduguri, Shettima described the attackers as barbaric and emphasized that no justification exists for the loss of innocent lives. His visit was intended to express solidarity with the victims and their families, assuring them of government assistance through NEMA and other relevant agencies.
Military Leadership Calls for Local Involvement in Counter-Terrorism Efforts
In light of the ongoing crisis, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), has appealed to communities in Borno and Yobe States to take a more active role in combating Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists. Following a closed-door meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaib, the CDS spoke to journalists about the need for residents to assist military operations against terrorism.
The service chiefs arrived in Maiduguri at the request of President Bola Tinubu, aiming to directly address the situation following a series of bomb blasts that claimed numerous lives. Oluyede believes that community support is vital in defeating the terrorists, many of whom are local residents. He highlighted the importance of local accountability in resolving the crisis and encouraged residents to collaborate with military forces.
Joint Task Force Achieves Major Success Against Terrorist Forces
In a significant military success, the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Khai (OPHK) enacted a coordinated attack early yesterday morning, resulting in the elimination of over 80 terrorists, including key commanders, near Malam Fatli military site. This decisive action came just one day after troops successfully repelled an attempt by ISWAP and Boko Haram to seize control of multiple military positions in the northeast.
Recent reports indicate that coordinated military operations effectively thwarted similar assaults on locations such as Nzimtiro, Baga, and Buratai, showcasing the resilience and tactical acumen of OPHK forces. Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, head of media and information for OPHK, detailed how the terrorists had attempted to employ armed drones and mass foot movements but were ultimately outmaneuvered by disciplined military tactics.
Significant Assets Captured as Military Operations Intensify
Subsequent military actions have resulted in the recovery of an extensive cache of weapons and equipment, including 52 AK-47 rifles, multiple machine guns, and significant amounts of ammunition and explosives. The successful operations not only disrupted the command structure of terrorist groups but also delivered a blow to their operational capabilities in the region, as highlighted by Uba.
Uba emphasized that the downfall of prominent terrorist commanders and militants has seriously weakened their operational effectiveness. He shared that the victory attests to the heightened combat capabilities, morale, and resilience of OPHK forces, paving the way for a more robust response to the ongoing threats posed by terrorist organizations in the northeast.
