Canada protects its borders and immigration system by not introducing new rules that affect temporary residents.
The new rules come with several immigration policies aimed at reducing the number of pipos that apply to stay in Canada.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says the new rules will allow immigration officers to cancel temporary residents’ documents in some circumstances.
The government claims the cancellations include electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), work and study permits, and temporary visas (TRVs).

IRCC has announced that it will cancel immigration documents on February 12, 2025 under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.
Regulators say they have reasonable grounds to believe that by the end of the period they are allowed to remain in Canada, they will ban foreign nationals from going to Canada.
Meanwhile, Canada says it welcomes people from all over the world to study, visit and even work, but subject to eligibility requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and regulations.
Canada further states that all temporary residents can obtain a TRV or eTA, allowing them to earn a permit to live a contributing life, study or work.
All documents are not essential to study in Canada unless the Immigration Department exempts you from immigration checks, and the authorities are now empowered to act in the event of a temporary document issue.
Meanwhile, Canada said it expected “approximately 7,000 additional temporary visa, work and study permit documents to be cancelled.”
The new rules will affect international students in Canada and cannot even be applied in the new year.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Bin officially set to issue 437,000 study permits for international student applications in 2025.
This is part of an effort to reduce the number of international students, but the new rules will allow Canadian immigration authorities to revoke some permits under certain circumstances.
According to the after-report, about 50,000 international students have applied for study permits to Canada to pursue higher education, but are absent from the schools they are applying to.
According to spring 2024 data, the number of affected doses in January 2025 will reach 50,000 from government agencies such as Nigeria, Rwanda, Ghana and Iran.
The data shows India and China at the top, with Contris’ list having the highest number of non-compliant students applying and not attending the schools they plan to attend.
However, the new rules also impact students who are unable to obtain the correct immigration documents that allow them to remain in Canada, and those who are in the country illegally.

According to the new rules, students applying for study permits to Canada will be affected.
Cancellation of a Canadian temporary study permit is the case if it is due to an administrative error or issue.
“If the official is satisfied with the study permit issued based on a clerical error, or if the alien dies, the official may cancel the study permit issued to the alien.”
The new rules also affect obtaining Canadian work permits and canceling temporary immigration visas.
“A work permit becomes invalid if it expires or is revoked. Or, if the official is satisfied, a work permit issued on the basis of an administrative error was issued or died.”
It is also affected if a government agency visits for ODA purposes, obtains a temporary visa in the event of incomplete documentation, death, or administrative error.
Consequences of temporary residence visa cancellation
The new changes are expected to have a small impact on foreigners, but the cancellations have already taken place.
