Carlos Alcaraz Poised for Iconic Experience at Bernabéu Stadium
Carlos Alcaraz may soon fulfill a lifelong dream by training on the hallowed turf of Real Madrid’s Bernabéu Stadium. Organizers of the Madrid Open have revealed plans to set up temporary clay practice courts within this historic venue, expanding its function as a multi-purpose arena.
From April 23 to 30, the Bernabéu will accommodate players participating in the tournament, with live coverage available on Sky Sports Tennis. This initiative will supplement the main training base located at Caja Magica, further enriching the experience for athletes and fans alike.
Alcaraz, a devoted Real Madrid supporter and the winner of the Madrid Open in both 2023 and 2024, will have the unique opportunity to practice at one of the most prestigious stadiums in sports history. However, unlike the public training sessions at Caja Magica, practices at the Bernabéu will be closed to fans, allowing players to focus intently on their preparation.
Revamping the Iconic Stadium for a Broader Purpose
The recent transformation of the Bernabéu into a versatile venue has accelerated, demonstrating its capability to host a variety of significant events. The stadium has a rich history, from the 1982 World Cup finals to hosting Taylor Swift’s concert in 2024, as well as becoming the site of Spain’s first regular-season NFL game when the Miami Dolphins faced off against the Washington Commanders last November.
Gerard Tzobanian, the tournament director, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with the Bernabéu, stating that it elevates the Madrid Open to a new level, allowing only the best players to compete on this prestigious stage.
Innovative Pitch Technology Facilitates Transition from Grass to Clay
A standout feature of the Bernabéu is its retractable pitch, part of a $1 billion renovation completed in late 2023. Divided into six sections measuring 11.6 meters by 107 meters, the pitch can be stored underground, which effectively allows for the installation of clay tennis courts on the same surface.
The facility employs cultivation lamps and climate control systems to maintain optimal lawn conditions, ensuring that both the football pitch and the newly constructed tennis courts can coexist seamlessly.
Real Madrid’s Schedule Unimpeded by Tournament Activities
Real Madrid’s participation in home matches during the Madrid Open will not be an issue. The team has strategically planned three away games against Real Betis, Espanyol, and Barcelona during the tournament dates, freeing up the stadium.
Moreover, any potential Champions League semi-final matchups against formidable opponents like Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain on April 28 or 29 will not clash with the tournament, as those matches will also take place away from home.
Sky Sports continues to expand its offerings, providing customers with access to over 50% more live sporting events this year without additional costs. Viewers can enjoy ATP and WTA tournaments live on Sky Sports, as well as through streaming options on NOW and the Sky Sports apps.
