Nigeria’s Super Eagles turned an upset into victory with an impressive 2-0 win over Algeria and booked their place in the 2025 African Cup of Nations semi-finals.
What was billed as a clash of equals between two undefeated giants instead turned into a statement performance.
Nigeria didn’t just beat Algeria. They outplayed and outplayed the Desert Foxes in the quarterfinals. Victory was determined by class, composure, and ruthless execution.
Before kick-off: pressure, noise and points to prove
The development of the match was by no means smooth. Nigeria arrived in Marrakech after a tumultuous week marked by unpaid bonuses, travel delays and reports of domestic tensions.
Algeria, on the other hand, boasted the best defensive record in the competition and entered the game with confidence, led by captain Riyad Mahrez, who famously broke the hearts of Nigerians in the 2019 AFCON semi-finals.
On paper, it was a heavyweight duel. It was one-way traffic on the pitch.
First half: Full control, no rewards yet
From the moment the opening whistle rang at the Grand Stade Marrakech, Nigeria imposed an aggressive high press and fearless attacking intent, with coach Eric Schell’s unchanged lineup.
Nigeria dominated possession, territory and tempo.
7 minutes: Victor Osimhen drifts down the right flank, swings the ball past his marker, and Aissa Mundy kicks it out for a corner. Osimhen rose highest from a set-piece, but his header went just over the bar.
15 minutes: Ademola Lookman receives a well-weighted pass from Alex Iwobi and breaks through Algeria’s last line, but his shot is blocked by goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
25 minutes: Osimhen goes clean through again, but Zidane rushes off his line to thwart him.
37 minutes: Akole Adams takes a shot at the end of a lightning counter-attack, but Zidane is stranded.
Zidane was Algeria’s savior, and although Nigeria’s frustrations grew, their belief never wavered.
Explosion in the second half: Osimhen breaks the wall
Two minutes after the restart, the pressure finally felt.
The wide-ranging move started with Frank Onyeka breaking up the play, passing through Eikor Adams and Alex Iwobi before finding Bruno Onyemaechi on the left. The defender’s shot was perfect.
Victor Osimhen stood up. He hung. He scored a header.
1-0 Nigeria.
It was a striker’s goal born of teamwork, timing and pure authority.
Seven minutes later, Osimhen almost had a shot again from Onyemaechi’s cross, but Zidane saved Algeria with a sharp save.
Akor Adams redeems himself
Algeria barely had time to regroup before Nigeria attacked again.
In the 57th minute, Onyeka intercepted an Algerian move and fed Iwobi. Iwobi released Osimhen and the reigning African Player of the Year did what any leader would do and sacrificed glory for victory.
Osimhen fired a shot at Akol Adams, who calmly slotted the ball past Zidane and into the net.
2-0. game over.
It was Adams’ second goal of the tournament, atone for his earlier mistake, and effectively sealed Nigeria’s place in the final four.
Neutralize Algeria: Blockade of Mahrez
Despite Algeria entering the match in dominant form, they posed little threat. They failed to register a single shot on target in the first half and struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace, pressing and positional discipline throughout the match.
Bright Ossai-Samuel gave his best performance in the Super Eagles shirt and completely neutralized Riyad Mahrez. Every dribble was checked. Every angle was closed. Nothing came easy.
At the back, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Onyemaechi and Ossai-Samuel were very good, combining aggression and composure to keep another clean sheet.
Man of the Match: Victor Osimhen
Osimhen’s influence far exceeded his goals.
1 goal
1 assist
keep pressing
selfless movement
He scored a total of four goals and provided two assists in the tournament and was named Man of the Match.
Shell head coach’s tactical master class
Eric Schell deserves a lot of credit.
He recognized that Algeria relied on a controlled build-up and destroyed it with intense high pressing.
He reacted quickly to disciplinary risks and defended the main midfielder ahead of the semi-final.
He brought on Moses Simon late to shore up the wide areas as Algeria chased.
He rested his stars, defended the result, and ended the match realistically.
Schell displayed maturity, adaptability and calm authority for a leader in the early stages of his international career.
Records are lost, history beckons
Saturday’s win was more than just a win.
Nigeria has reached the AFCON semi-finals for the 16th time, which is a tournament record.
The Super Eagles scored 14 goals, becoming the highest-scoring Nigerian team ever in AFCON, surpassing the legendary 2000 team.
Nigeria became the first team to win five consecutive games in AFCON.
They also became the first team to score two or more goals in at least five games in a single AFCON.
Against Algeria, Nigeria had nearly 70% possession and completely dictated the rhythm of the match.
AFCON 2025 Next Match: Semi-finals vs Host Morocco
The victory sets up a mouth-watering semi-final showdown with hosts Morocco on Wednesday 14 January 2026 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The stadium will be electric and will have a capacity of 69,500 people.
Nigeria have previously lifted the trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013 and are two wins away from clinching their fourth AFCON title.
Algeria advanced undefeated. Nigeria’s momentum was unstoppable.
When the Super Eagles decide to take flight, there’s no chaos enough to make a fuss, no pressure enough, no enemy powerful enough to ground them.
