Italian Agri-Food Companies Embrace Opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa
Italian agri-food companies aiming to expand into sub-Saharan Africa can now access insights from the Italian agri-food technology initiatives tailored for the region. This project was unveiled at the Fruit Logistica Fair, held at the Kenyan pavilion, with numerous industry representatives in attendance. The event once again underscored the vast potential of sub-Saharan Africa alongside the challenges Italian firms encounter when operating independently within this dynamic market.
Renzo Piraccini, the project manager from the Agri-Food Technology Department, emphasized the significance of the agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa. He stated that it stands out as one of the most strategic industries for enhancing food security, creating jobs, fostering economic growth, and generating export opportunities.
The network includes several innovative companies: Aretè, which specializes in smart systems; FC Engineering, focused on refrigeration technologies; and Ferrari Growtech, known for its horticultural innovations. Other participants consist of Futura, a fruit puree manufacturer; GreenExta, which produces biological control products; Idromeccanica Lucchini, a professional greenhouse manufacturer; and Irritec, specializing in precision irrigation solutions. Additionally, Suba Seeds is recognized for its seed production, while Tropical Food Machinery excels in processing technologies for fruits and tomatoes. Unitech offers expertise in sorting and packaging technologies for fruits and vegetables.
Joining this initiative are two key partners aiming to promote activities in the sub-Saharan region: the Coface Group, active in the insurance sector, and the triennial trade fair Cibus Tec.
As Africa’s population surges beyond 1.4 billion today, projected to exceed 2.5 billion by 2050, the importance of fruits and vegetables in ensuring affordable access to fresh produce cannot be overstated. Developing robust and efficient supply chains will be vital to meet this growing demand.
The project’s goals include raising awareness of member companies’ activities through various promotional and networking events, establishing a dependable partner network to explore business opportunities in diverse African nations, and implementing technical training initiatives to support the network’s commercial endeavors. Moreover, efforts will focus on identifying and recruiting local talent to integrate into the teams of member companies.
Additionally, several pilot projects are set to be introduced as part of this initiative. These projects aim to create efficient supply chains for processing tomatoes, develop model plants and processing centers for mangoes, promote avocado processing via packaging and refrigeration facilities, and enhance subcontracting by fostering a network of service providers for African farmers.
Three key locations have been earmarked for promotional and detailed events: Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; and Johannesburg, South Africa. The first two events are scheduled for March 30th and 31st in Dakar, with another set planned for June 17th and 18th in Nairobi.
