Coalition Voices Alarm Over Rising Insecurity in Katsina State
A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Katsina State has raised urgent concerns regarding the escalating insecurity following a recent deadly attack. They are calling for an immediate review of the existing peace agreement with the insurgents.
In a statement issued yesterday by Public Relations Officer Dahiru Gambo Rafindadi, the coalition condemned the recent assaults on the communities of Farun Bara, Dandume, and Jikamusi. These attacks resulted in multiple fatalities and left numerous residents injured.
The coalition emphasizes that these latest incidents signify a significant setback for the fragile peace previously established in frontline areas, following extensive dialogue and peace initiatives with local bandits. The resurgence of violence poses serious questions about the sustainability of such peace arrangements, especially as communities gear up for the rainy farming season, a critical time for food security and livelihoods.
Describing the acts of violence as “senseless,” the coalition noted that they have plunged affected communities into grief and fear. The ongoing bloodshed disrupts local livelihoods and threatens the socio-economic stability of the region.
While acknowledging the proactive efforts of Governor Dikko Umar Radda in addressing security challenges, the coalition stressed the need to bolster mechanisms that can prevent further escalation. They called for a detailed reassessment of the peace agreement with bandits to ensure its effectiveness and durability.
The coalition expressed support for the governor and local council leaders and urged them to remain steadfast. Their statement underscored the necessity for decisive action, stating, “We cannot let this situation worsen. Every loss of life is too many; urgent interventions are needed. We call on all levels of government to collaborate effectively to manage this crisis before it spirals further out of control.”
The coalition also has reached out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting the severe security deterioration across Katsina State and neighboring regions. They are advocating for the prompt deployment of comprehensive and effective security measures to safeguard lives and property, emphasizing that security forces must be well-trained, appropriately equipped, and adequately supported to carry out their duties effectively.
In addition, they have urged local parliament members to prioritize security concerns affecting their constituents. The coalition implored legislators to move beyond silence and routine actions, advocating for urgent engagement and sustained advocacy to prevent further violence in the state. They called for unity and resilience against the ongoing crisis, offering condolences to victims’ families and expressing solidarity with affected communities.
