Billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Deji Adeleke, on Wednesday spoke publicly for the first time about the long-running paternity dispute surrounding his son, Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, and the girl Anuoluwapo, who the artist is said to have fathered.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Adeleke denied the claims of parentage as false and accused controversial social media commentator Kemi Olunloyo of impersonating the child and its mother online for years to support the claims.
The controversy centers on Ayo Labinjo, an Ibadan-based woman who claims the singer dumped her, who claimed that she had sexual relations with Davido during his visit to the city a few years ago and that they had a baby girl, Anu.
The issue recently resurfaced after an Instagram account purported to belong to the child appealed to Davido to undergo another DNA test. In response, the singer said that five DNA tests have already been conducted, all with negative results.
Mr Adeleke told journalists that he was forced to speak publicly because the issue kept resurfacing.
“I am Deji Adeleke. I am a father of five children, three boys and two girls. David Adeleke, whom you all know as Davido, is the baby of my family and he is the last one.”
“I am convening this press conference, this is the first time I am speaking to the press, and there is one reason only. I am not on social media, but I am sure those of you who are on social media are inundated with all sorts of stories about this issue that keeps coming up almost every year, a girl named Anuoluwapo in Ibadan, who Kemi Olunloyo keeps insisting that David is the father of this girl.
Adeleke revealed that he first learned of the allegations in 2014 when he received a letter from a lawyer in Ibadan with photos, documents and a birth certificate that listed “Adeleke David” as the child’s father.
“Tracking the matter back to its inception, Ms. Adeleke explained that she first became aware of the allegations in 2014 when she received a DHL package from Ibadan containing a photo of Davido and the child, a birth certificate listing “Adeleke David” as the father, and a letter from the child’s grandmother.
He said the child’s widowed grandmother appealed to Davido to persuade him to undergo a paternity test, stressing that she was seeking confirmation and responsibility, not marriage or financial blackmail.
“The package also contained a letter from Anu’s grandmother, including her phone number. She wrote that she was a widow with two daughters, and that her husband had died many years before and that she had been raising them by herself.
“She said that after meeting David Adeleke, who had come to Ibadan for a show, her eldest daughter told her that David Adeleke was responsible for her pregnancy. She said her daughter gave birth to a baby girl and asked David to undergo a paternity test. She made it clear that she was not asking David to marry her daughter, but only to confirm parentage and take responsibility if confirmed.”
Mr Adeleke immediately contacted the family, assuring them that he was ready to take in the child if it was proven that she was his granddaughter, and said he personally arranged for a DNA test at Vedic Lifecare Hospital in Lagos and that the sample was analyzed in South Africa.
“I immediately read the letter and called the woman before talking to David. She said she hadn’t spoken to her son yet, but if she really is my granddaughter, she has no problem with me. I would gladly welcome her into the family.”
“I sent a driver to Ibadan to find out where they live. I told her about the Lekki Hospital in India, which I use, where they could arrange a DNA test. The hospital explained that the samples would be collected in Nigeria but would be sent to South Africa for analysis.”
He explained that saliva samples from Davido and the child were taken in the presence of all concerned, and both he and the child’s grandmother were designated to receive the results.
“On the appointed day, my driver took the mother, grandmother and child to Lagos. David, myself and his entourage met them at the hospital. Only David, myself, grandmother, mother and child were allowed into the room. Samples were taken using saliva rather than blood and sealed for analysis.”
Adeleke said the results confirmed that Davido was not the father of the child, with a 0.00 percent probability of paternity.
“When the results were ready, as agreed, my grandmother and I both went to collect them. The results said there was a zero percent chance of paternity. The lab clearly explained that David was not the father of the child.”
He added that despite the negative result, he personally offered to conduct two additional DNA tests to rule out any suspicions and offered to cover the accommodation and logistics costs while the family remained in Lagos.
Adeleke said multiple tests were ultimately conducted, all with the same conclusion.
“My grandmother broke down and cried. I told her that mistakes could happen and suggested that they do two more DNA tests at other reputable centers. I offered to keep them in Lagos for a week at my expense so that additional tests could be carried out.”
Adeleke rejected calls to release the DNA report, citing safety and legal concerns.
“It is dangerous for anyone’s DNA profile to be in the public domain,” he said, adding that releasing such data could put David and minors at serious risk.
He pointed out that the Adeleke family already has 14 grandchildren, stressing that there is nothing to be gained by refusing to have children.
“What’s the other thing?” he asked. “Are you saying I can’t afford to take care of her? But the science is there. The science is clear.”
The businessman concluded by appealing to the public to ignore online reports about the incident, saying they are misleading and caused by impersonation and misinformation.
