Magnitude Claims Victory at Dubai World Cup
Steve Asmussen’s Magnitude triumphed in the 30th Dubai World Cup, securing the trainer’s second victory since Carlin’s win in 2008. Anticipation surrounded Japan’s Breeders’ Cup Classic champion, Forever Young, who had recently defended his title at the Saudi Cup last month. However, Magnitude arrived at Meydan in peak condition, mirroring the successful trajectory of Asmussen’s Gun Runner, who previously finished second to Arrogate in 2017.
Dominant Performance from Magnitude
Under jockey Jose Ortiz, the 4-year-old Magnitude led the race right from the start, holding onto his position as Forever Young attempted to close in. As the finish line approached, Magnitude’s grip on the lead proved unshakeable, and the field thinned out behind him. Forever Young improved from his previous year’s performance to claim second place, followed closely by Simon and Ed Crisford’s Meydan, who secured bronze.
Asmussen Celebrates a Milestone
For Asmussen, this victory marked a significant achievement as it was his first Dubai World Cup win as a jockey. “I am elated. We were aware of Magnitude’s potential, but we had to respect the speed of Forever Young, one of the world’s best horses,” he remarked. The race unfolded with tactical flexibility; while the plan was to allow Magnitude to lead, he was prepared to adjust based on the competition. Ortiz expressed satisfaction with Magnitude’s performance and their strategy, highlighting the overall race dynamics.
Long-Awaited Success for Winchell
Owner Ron Winchell regarded this victory as a long-overdue redemption following Gun Runner’s near miss, calling the win “indescribable.” He acknowledged the immense effort involved, knowing they were up against some of the best competitors in the world, particularly referencing Forever Young. “The task was daunting, but achieving it feels incredible,” he added. Asmussen reiterated that the horse executed the race as planned, showcasing confidence throughout.
Karandagan Clinches Dubai Sheema Classic
In a stellar display, Karandagan reaffirmed his status as the world’s top horse by defeating the perennial favorite, Westwind Brows, in the Dubai Sheema Classic. Under jockey Francis-Henri Graffard, Karandagan had previously experienced defeat in this race last year. However, a strong finish following a successful season that included victories at Saint-Cloud and a historic triumph in the Japan Cup elevated him to the top of the global rankings.
Graffard Expresses Relief and Joy
Chrisford’s West Wind Blows maintained a steady pace during the race, with Karandagan strategically making his move as they approached the home stretch. With a remarkable finishing burst, Karandagan surged ahead to secure victory by three-quarters of a length. Graffard celebrated his inaugural Dubai win, expressing relief after a long winter and acknowledging Karandagan’s evolution into a world-class competitor.
Ombudsman Shines at Dubai Turf
The Ombudsman dazzled in his performance at the Dubai Turf, completing the race with finesse. William Buick exhibited calm control from the outset, navigating the early phases before making a decisive move to the front. The Godolphin-trained horse emerged victorious, beating Chris Ford’s Kuduwa by two lengths. Trainer John Gosden expressed satisfaction with the horse’s development, noting his maturity and strategic approach throughout the race.
