Ekiti State Government Launches Security Operation to Combat Crime
The Ekiti State Government, in collaboration with Commissioner of Police Mr. Michael Farade, has initiated a comprehensive security operation aimed at eradicating banditry and criminal activities near the state borders. This initiative seeks to transform Ekiti into a safer environment for its residents.
Inter-Agency Collaboration for Enhanced Security
The operation includes a diverse range of security agencies, such as the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante groups. This multi-faceted approach underscores the commitment to effectively tackle crime in the region.
Commencement of Bush-Clearing Initiative
Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana (retired), the Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Affairs, announced the launch of the bush-raking exercise at the Ekiti State Police Command. This critical operation commenced at an undisclosed location and will continue indefinitely until safety is ensured.
Clearing Criminal Elements from Communities
Mr. Ogundana emphasized the importance of restoring peace and security, stating that the initiative aims to encourage a return to normalcy for residents. “We want criminals who believe they can find refuge in Ekiti to be driven out of their hiding spots,” he noted, highlighting the need for increased troop mobilization to achieve this goal.
Initial Successes and Continued Commitment
According to Ogundana, the initial phase of the bush-clearing campaign—targeting the northern border of Ekiti—was successful. Ongoing investigations of apprehended suspects are underway to further strengthen security measures in the area.
Expanding Operations Across the Region
The operation has already yielded positive results, with significant clearing completed that led to the disbandment of criminal groups attempting to infiltrate surrounding communities in Kwara and Kogi states. The Governor’s continued authorizations reflect a strong commitment to ensuring that Ekiti State provides a reliable sense of security for its citizens.
Call for Teamwork and Professionalism Among Officers
During an address to his troops, Commissioner Farade stressed the importance of professionalism and discipline among police officers during this operation. He urged them to engage in essential security clearing and visibility efforts, aiming to prevent criminal activities and safeguard vulnerable locations, including places of worship and agricultural areas.
Ongoing and Strategic Military Engagements
The Commissioner of Police also highlighted the need for continuous military action in neighboring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Osun, and parts of Northern Nigeria, asserting that these special operations are crucial for deterring external threats. Reinforcing community safety remains the primary objective as the authorities work collaboratively to preserve peace in the region.
