Shaping History Through Vision and Courage
Written by Cal Okoronkwo
History often unfolds not by chance but through intentional design. At the confluence of ambition and determination, transformative policies emerge. For Tony Onyemachi Elumelu, the Chairman of UBA Plc and Heir Holdings, such a pivotal moment arose in 2010 when the Central Bank of Nigeria, then led by Lamido Sanusi, compelled him to step down as managing director of UBA after a decade of leadership.
A Pivotal Decision
Initially taken aback by this unexpected development, Elumelu contemplated legal action against the board. However, he ultimately recognized the broader implications of his situation. Where many perceived turmoil, he discerned a roadmap for growth—both in terms of adapting policy and seizing new opportunities. He emphasized that pursuing legal action would alienate critical stakeholders, a realization that shifted his focus from personal interests to corporate responsibilities.
Broadening Horizons
This defining moment prompted Elumelu to extend his vision beyond the walls of a single institution. He established Heir Holdings, aimed not only at profitability but also at advancing Africa’s development. He has consistently argued that the private sector must spearhead growth initiatives, as governments cannot single-handedly drive that change. This belief has become the foundation of his entrepreneurial journey.
Transforming Ideas into Action
To fully appreciate Elumelu’s path, one must consider the influence of ideas on structural systems. In his early career, the prevailing economic narrative around Africa was one of reliance, dominated by aid dependency and short-term profits that often undermined institutional development. In this context, Africa was viewed merely as an exploitable market rather than a continent ripe for empowerment.
Building an Ecosystem
By shifting focus away from a singular banking platform, Elumelu was compelled to foster a more comprehensive ecosystem. His investments now encompass power, hospitality, healthcare, and financial services, all strategically aligned to stimulate economic transformation across Africa. This holistic approach not only broadened his impact but also reflected his evolving philosophy.
Championing Africapitalism
The policy changes he faced brought greater ideological clarity. Elumelu began advocating more vigorously for Africapitalism, the idea that long-term private sector investment is essential for realizing Africa’s potential. He famously articulated the need to generate both economic and social wealth simultaneously, harmonizing profit motives with a commitment to purpose.
Empowering Entrepreneurs
Integral to his legacy is the establishment of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), which has transitioned from boardroom influence to grassroots empowerment. Through TEF, thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs across Africa have gained access to vital funding, mentorship, and opportunities. Elumelu believes that empowering even one entrepreneur can create numerous jobs, illustrating the interconnectedness of opportunity and growth.
A Comprehensive Impact
At a recent virtual press conference, TEF’s CEO Somati Chris Asoruka highlighted the foundation’s substantial impact, announcing the disbursement of $100 million since its inception to support around 24,000 young entrepreneurs across 54 African nations. Beneficiaries have collectively generated approximately $4.2 billion in revenue and created over 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs. The strong interest in the 2026 program, with 265,000 applications, underscores the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in Africa and the critical need for early-stage funding across various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and AI.
Lessons from the Journey
Elumelu’s journey illustrates how policy shifts can become platforms for innovation. He transformed what could have been a setback into a powerful opportunity by aligning personal convictions with broader systemic changes. This leads to essential questions about the interplay between policy and individual agency. Can private-sector-led development accelerate in line with Africa’s rapidly growing population? Will entrepreneurial ecosystems thrive without robust national infrastructure? Can the philosophy of Africapitalism endure beyond its founders?
Legacy in Progress
As he celebrated his 63rd birthday this past March, it is evident that Elumelu’s story remains a work in progress. His journey serves as a compelling blueprint, demonstrating that policies extend beyond government mandates, and decisions must encompass shared interests. The Elumelu model reflects a vision for Africa’s future, one that demands intentionality and alignment between vision and action.
