Edo State Authorities Seize Cannabis Valued at NOK 724.5 Million
The Edo State Commander of the National Narcotics Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mitchell Ofojeju, announced on Saturday that operatives successfully confiscated cannabis with a street value of NOK 724.5 million.
Details of the Seizure
During a press conference held in Benin, the capital of Edo State, Ofojeju revealed that the seized cannabis, weighing 7,245 kilograms, was packed into 483 bags and transported in two articulated trucks typically used for carrying alcoholic beverages.
Arrests Made in Connection with Drug Trafficking
The operation led to the arrest of five male suspects linked to the illegal shipment. Among them are Ibrahim Abu, 29, Abu Abdulrazeth, 28, Jibril Jaminu, 35, Andrew Moses, 22, and Ganiyu Abu, 21, all hailing from Etsako East and Etsako West Local Government Areas of Edo State.
Significance of the Operation
According to Commander Ofojeju, this operation represents a significant achievement for the NDLEA, marking the first recorded seizure of two trucks loaded with illegal drugs simultaneously. He emphasized that this achievement disrupts an extensive interstate drug trafficking network.
Implications for Drug Traffickers
Ofojeju commended the operation as a testament to the command’s commitment and operational effectiveness in combating drug trafficking. He noted that the large quantity of drugs seized underscores the magnitude of the threat that the NDLEA faces and sends a stern warning to drug lords and traffickers that Edo State is no safe haven for criminal activities.
Investigation and Future Actions
Preliminary investigations indicate that the illicit consignment originated from Sabongida Ora in Owan West Local Government Area and was intended for Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Ofojeju expressed concern over the potential harm such a large volume of drugs could have inflicted on the region if left unchecked.
Community Involvement and Ongoing Efforts
The trucks, along with the seized exhibits, have been relocated to the Benin City command center for comprehensive documentation and further investigation. A full-scale inquiry is underway to uncover the networks behind this substantial trafficking operation, and the commander assured the public that all involved would be brought to justice. Ofojeju also urged community members to provide timely information to enhance the efforts of government agencies in safeguarding their neighborhoods, reinforcing a collective approach to crime prevention.
