Kwara Government Launches $250,000 Interest-Free Loan Initiative
Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq announced the commencement of a $250,000 interest-free loan distribution to empower local entrepreneurs. This initiative aims to support small business clusters across Kwara, stimulate the grassroots economy, and promote sustainable development. A total of 1,000 Kwarans will benefit from this program, receiving loans of $25,000 each.
Selection Process and Project Background
The beneficiaries were selected from various community interest groups, as detailed in a statement by Governor Abdulrazaq’s spokesperson, Rafiu Ajakai. The funding comes through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Lands of Kwara State (Kwara ACReSaL) initiative, which operates in partnership with the World Bank under the Community Revolving Fund (CRF) program.
Government’s Commitment to Economic Growth
Governor Abdulrazaq emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the local economy and improving the quality of life for residents. He encouraged the beneficiaries to manage the funds responsibly and repay them promptly to allow future participants access to similar opportunities.
Empowerment Focused on Women, Youth, and Farmers
During a flag-off ceremony in Ilorin, the governor stated, “This World Bank-supported initiative aims to provide women, youth, farmers, and cooperatives with resources to create wealth, generate employment, and elevate household incomes. It represents a significant step toward poverty alleviation.” He congratulated the initial beneficiaries, highlighting their role in paving the way for future funding and support.
Community Engagement and Feedback
The event saw the presence of various stakeholders including government officials, agency heads, community leaders, and market women. Hon. Nafisat Moussa Bughe, Environment Secretary and Chairperson of the ACReSaL Steering Committee, emphasized that the program’s success hinges on the beneficiaries’ responsible utilization and timely repayment of the funds. She remarked, “Today is not just about distributing funds; it signifies empowerment and the nurturing of sustainable growth within our communities.”
Comprehensive Community Development Efforts
In addition to financial support, the Kwara ACReSaL program is also focused on improving living conditions through access to clean drinking water in rural areas. This highlights the government’s broader commitment to enhancing community welfare beyond just financial empowerment.
Appreciation from Local Leaders and Beneficiaries
Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe, the ACReSaL State Project Coordinator, praised the initiative as a testament to the governor’s dedication to inclusive growth and shared prosperity. He expressed gratitude toward development partners and stakeholders for their essential support in bringing the program to fruition. Community leader Dr. Khalil Yahaya also lauded the governor for his commitment to community development, citing numerous infrastructure advancements made under the ACReSaL project.
Mrs. Abdulkareem Olapeju, representing the beneficiaries, voiced her heartfelt appreciation for the initiative, describing it as transformative for both her and her community.
