Sung-jae Im Takes Early Lead at Valspar Championship
On the first day of the Valspar Championship, Im Sung-jae showcased his return to form with an impressive opening round of 64, finishing at 7 under par and leading Brandt Snedeker by a narrow margin of one stroke.
After struggling with two consecutive missed cuts post his wrist injury, Sung-jae made a statement with his strong performance on Thursday, including two eagles during the round.
He converted an 18-foot eagle putt on the 11th par-5 and a remarkable 35-foot eagle putt on the first par-5 after the turn. However, two bogeys in the final four holes slightly hindered his momentum.
Brandt Snedeker’s Resilient Performance
Despite not securing a win in eight years and finishing in the top 10 only twice last year, Brandt Snedeker capitalized on his sponsor exemption as U.S. captain in the Presidents Cup, kicking off his campaign at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course with a solid start. The 45-year-old played a clean round, achieving his first bogey-free day in 14 years here, making three consecutive birdies to start his round of 65 on the back nine.
“I had a really good game plan,” Snedeker stated after the match. “I relied heavily on my putter, made some excellent putts today, and positioned myself well off the tee, hitting a lot of fairways and greens.” He expressed enthusiasm about his start, keeping in mind the long journey ahead in the tournament.
Davis Thompson and Other Competitors Firing on All Cylinders
With a score of 66, Davis Thompson secured third place on the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Pierceson Coody, Andrew Putnam, and Billy Horschel trailed closely behind, all finishing at 4 under par with rounds of 67. Horschel, who missed last week’s Players Championship, is under pressure to either win or break back into the top 50 for a spot at next month’s Masters.
Two-time major champion Xander Schauffele and Jacob Bridgman, who has already celebrated a victory this year at Riviera, also enjoyed bogey-free rounds. They were part of a sizable group that included Players runner-up Matt Fitzpatrick, who shot a respectable 68 to sit at 3 under.
Corey Connors and Jordan Spieth Encounter Challenges
Corey Connors recorded a round of 69, marked by a noteworthy moment when he notched back-to-back eagles on the 18th and first holes. Conversely, three-time major champion Jordan Spieth began the tournament positively with a front-nine score of 5 under but faced difficulties during the back nine, ultimately finishing with a 69. He notably missed critical putts for birdie and par on the 11th and 13th holes, respectively, and suffered a double bogey after hitting into the water on the challenging 16th hole, often referred to as the “snake pit.”
Defending Champion Viktor Hovland’s Recovery
Defending champion Viktor Hovland struggled initially, finishing 2 over after six holes. However, he rallied to complete his round at 1 under par, shooting a total of 70. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka returned to Innisbrook, finishing with a level par score of 71.
