Mascherano Urges Focus Amid Stadium Opening Festivities
MIAMI — Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano emphasized the importance of maintaining concentration as his players prepare for the opening of their new stadium on Saturday night. He encouraged the team to transform their excitement into motivation to secure three crucial points against Austin FC.
The match against Austin FC signifies the long-anticipated debut of the 26,700-capacity stadium at Miami Freedom Park for the Herons, who have been playing in a temporary venue in Fort Lauderdale since their entry into Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2020.
“We have to manage our emotions carefully,” Mascherano remarked during a press conference. “This is a significant moment for the club as we inaugurate the stadium we envisioned from the start, one that represents our hard work and dedication.”
He added, “However, our primary focus must remain on maintaining the momentum we built from our recent successes, especially after a strong performance in New York. The best way to celebrate this new beginning will be with a victory after the game.”
Mascherano stressed the need to resist becoming overwhelmed by the excitement surrounding the festivities, noting that such an atmosphere can lead to a relaxed mentality. “We must harness the positive energy and channel it onto the pitch to ensure we achieve a win,” he said.
The team had their first training session at the new stadium on Thursday morning, which was attended by fans and media. They utilized the Bermuda grass pitch in preparation for the upcoming match.
Notably, Lionel Messi, Noah Allen, and Alex Shaw did not participate in the final segment of practice after returning from international obligations. Messi played a full match as Argentina triumphed 5-0 over Zambia in Buenos Aires just two days prior.
Mason later confirmed that Messi is in good health and expected to play on Saturday. “He seems to be feeling well, and physically there’s nothing concerning. Unless unforeseen issues arise, he will take the field,” Mascherano stated.
Prior to the international break, Messi scored during Miami’s thrilling 3-2 victory over New York City FC, a win that propelled the MLS Cup champions to third place in the Eastern Conference.
