Governor Calls for Peace Following Deadly Clashes in Kebbi State
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has urged for calm in the Arwasa community of Argungu local government area following violent clashes between Hausa and Fulani residents that resulted in three fatalities and heightened tensions in the region.
During a visit to the affected area on Tuesday, the governor emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning that anyone involved in the violence would face legal repercussions. “Our government will not condone unlawful actions. Those implicated in these killings, irrespective of their ethnicity or social standing, will be apprehended, investigated, and prosecuted,” he stated.
Idris expressed his concern for innocent individuals caught in the turmoil, affirming, “We cannot allow the innocent to bear the consequences of others’ crimes.”
The conflict began on Monday night due to a misunderstanding. Reports indicate that some Fulani youths performed motorcycle stunts within the community, which incited anger among local youths. Tensions escalated rapidly after a Hausa resident was allegedly stabbed and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
In retaliation, local youths launched an attack on a Fulani settlement nearby, resulting in the deaths of two individuals who were reportedly uninvolved in the initial confrontation. This prompted several families to flee, escalating fears of ongoing violence in the agriculturally significant region.
Idris described the situation as both painful and regrettable, contradicting the long history of peaceful coexistence in the Emirate of Argungu. “This incident is completely foreign to the harmony we have enjoyed for decades. We must not let it divide us,” he remarked.
In the aftermath of the violence, local authorities have deployed security personnel to stabilize the community and prevent further altercations. Argungu Local Government Area Chairman Sani Aliyu Gurma provided a briefing to the governor, noting that tensions worsened after the initial stabbing incident. “What began with a single stabbing tragically escalated, leading to innocent casualties,” he explained while commending the governor’s prompt response.
The governor has instructed security forces to intensify their investigations, apprehend the assailants, and facilitate the safe return of displaced individuals. He also urged traditional leaders, youth representatives, and community stakeholders to emphasize dialogue and restraint. “We must embrace peace and respect the rule of law,” Idris added.
In northern Nigeria, tensions frequently arise between agricultural and pastoralist communities, often fueled by disputes over land usage, displacement, and misunderstandings. While many areas have historically enjoyed peaceful relations, isolated incidents like the Arwasa clashes can escalate rapidly. Observers highlight the fragile dynamics of rural locales and underscore the necessity for effective dispute resolution frameworks. Nonetheless, authorities assure that the situation in Al-Wasa is manageable, as security agencies continue their efforts to restore normalcy.
