Zac Crawley Shines as Kent Faces Record Challenge from Northamptonshire
Zac Crawley continued to impress in Kent’s Sub-30 County Championship, scoring for the third consecutive year as Northamptonshire achieved a remarkable total of 684 for two declared at Canterbury. This impressive score underscores the team’s strength, anchored by significant contributions from several players.
Northamptonshire saw a series of stellar performances, initiated by opening batsmen Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter, along with Calvin Harrison. Nathan McSweeney rounded off their strong start with a century, marking the first time in centuries that Northampton’s top four batsmen have all surpassed 100 runs in a single match.
Proctor played a standout role, notching his first double century and finishing on an unbeaten 261. However, after his departure, Kent found themselves in a precarious position, quickly losing Ben Compton and Sam North East as focus shifted to Crawley, the England opener under pressure to perform.
Crawley’s recent performances have raised eyebrows, as he averaged just over 31 runs in 64 games leading up to this match. After scoring just nine and 20 at Durham last week, he demonstrated composure in reaching 26 before being dismissed by Harry Conway’s delivery, leaving Kent at 119 for six.
In Nottinghamshire’s match against Glamorgan, Ben Duckett, Crawley’s opening partner for England, pushed for valuable points, but Joe Clarke’s outstanding 136 runs secured a commanding 450-point lead for Nottinghamshire. Meanwhile, Glamorgan struggled, managing only 113 in their second innings and failing to keep pace with the county champions.
Ben McKinney aimed to displace Crawley or Duckett but faced challenges, ultimately being dismissed as Gloucestershire recorded a declared score of 605. Durham’s bowlers, Kemar Roach and Ben Lane, shored up their advantage with three wickets each as Gloucestershire found themselves on 168 at stumps.
Elsewhere, Craig Overton’s remarkable 141 propelled Somerset to a total of 348 against Essex, who struggled after being dismissed for 149. Recovery efforts saw the hosts approach 131 without further loss, though they remain 68 runs behind as they head into the crucial final days of play.
