Nottingham Forest’s Europa League Bid Alive After Draw with FC Porto
Nottingham Forest’s hopes of progressing in the Europa League remain intact following a 1-1 draw in their quarter-final first leg against FC Porto. A comical own goal by Porto’s Martim Fernandes salvaged the match for Forest, who faced a challenging encounter against the Primeira Liga leaders.
Fielding a significantly altered squad, Forest struggled initially, with Porto’s William Gomes testing their defense right from the outset. The turning point came when Fernandes miscalculated a back pass from 25 yards out, inadvertently sending the ball into his own net, thus bringing the score to level terms.
In the second half, Forest had a potential go-ahead goal disallowed, but goalkeeper Stefan Ortega’s crucial saves ensured the team would head back to the City Ground on even footing for the return leg. Importantly, by sharing the spoils, Forest managed to keep several key Premier League players rested for their vital match against Aston Villa on Sunday.
If Forest secures a victory in the home leg, it is likely they will face Aston Villa in the semi-finals. Villa, who won their first leg against Bologna, loom large in manager Vitor Pereira’s strategic considerations as he ponders the upcoming fixtures.
This match marked Forest’s first European quarter-final since their defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup three decades ago, yet Pereira made it clear that his priorities lay elsewhere by rotating nine players from the squad that recently triumphed over Tottenham in the Premier League.
Among those returning was Chris Wood, who made his first appearance since mid-October due to a knee injury. The action started swiftly, with Porto mounting an offensive in the opening moments. Wood, however, had yet to make any contributions by the time Forest should have been trailing.
A quick clearance allowed Seko Fofana to link up with Terem Moffi, whose shot was blocked by Ortega, preceding a follow-up attempt from Borja Sainz. It seemed a matter of time before Porto capitalized, and they took the lead in the 11th minute. A well-crafted move saw Gabriel Veiga score from a precise cross following a backheel from Pablo Rosario.
Mori expressed frustration, but he would soon receive a fortuitous turn of events just two minutes later. Porto maintained a grip on the match until Fernandes’s miscalculation allowed Forest back into the contest, turning the momentum in their favor. Despite having the momentum, Forest found themselves nearly behind again by halftime when Moffi headed a well-placed cross directly at Ortega.
In the 63rd minute, Forest believed they had gained the lead when Igor Jesus bested Porto’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for handball, dashing their hopes. Porto continued their offensive effort, with William prompting a magnificent save from Ortega, and Deniz Gül narrowly missing the mark shortly after.
Victor Froholt came close as well, sending a shot agonizingly wide as Porto pressed for an advantage to take into the second leg. Pereira, returning to his former club with a wealth of experience, prepared to face Nottingham again next week as he seeks to build upon the leg’s outcome.
