Melania Trump Hosts Education Summit Featuring Humanoid Robot
First Lady Melania Trump made headlines during an education summit at the White House, where she shared the stage with a striking humanoid AI robot known as Figure 03. This sleek, black-and-white figure, initially mistaken for a creature from science fiction, is designed to engage in social interactions and assist in various tasks.
In a video from the event, Figure 03 is seen walking alongside the First Lady, greeting attendees in multiple languages and gesturing as it engaged the audience. “Figure 03, thank you for joining us,” Melania Trump remarked, adding that the robot represented her first American-made humanoid guest at the White House.
The video quickly garnered viral attention across social media platforms, attracting hundreds of thousands of views and sparking discussions about the technology. However, details regarding the robot’s creators and its intended applications received scant coverage.
Figure 03 was developed by Figure, an AI robotics company focused on producing lifelike robots. Just six months ago, the company announced on LinkedIn that it had successfully raised over $1 billion in funding, with significant contributions from major investors such as Nvidia and LG Technology Ventures. On Wednesday, CEO and founder Brett Adcock celebrated the robot’s appearance as a historic milestone—marking it as the first humanoid robot to grace the White House.
Standing at 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 135 pounds, Figure 03 is marketed as an autonomous aide capable of assisting with household chores. The robot is enveloped in a mesh fabric, equipped with a camera in its hand, and features built-in tactile sensors to enhance its operational capabilities. Promotional materials showcase its ability to perform tasks like loading dishwashers, folding laundry, and even tidying up children’s toys.
During the summit, which focused on the intersection of AI and education, Melania Trump addressed 45 women leaders from around the globe, exploring the potential advantages of technology, particularly through the use of humanoid educators. She envisioned a future where artificial intelligence transitions from mobile devices to humanoid forms, offering educational support at home. “Imagine a humanoid educator named Plato, with instant access to a vast array of knowledge,” she stated, emphasizing the potential for personalized education.
While Figure 03 is not currently marketed for educational use or available for consumer purchase, it operates on a sophisticated Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model. This technology enables the robot to process real-time visual data through its cameras and employ AI inference to execute tasks. Figure 03 utilizes a proprietary AI model named Helix, allowing for responsive interaction through verbal commands.
Interestingly, there appear to be no formal contracts between Figure AI and the federal government, and both the White House and President Biden have yet to comment on the robot’s presence. Nevertheless, humanoid AI technology has sparked interest within the Trump administration, with discussions reportedly underway regarding the potential use of similar robots in military applications.
Despite this national interest, Figure 03’s primary role seems to differ from military assistance. The company’s earlier models, like Figure 02, have concentrated on conducting manual labor. Adcock has expressed his vision for these robots to help mitigate the ongoing labor shortage in the United States, asserting that automation may soon reduce labor costs significantly. “As robots integrate into various sectors, including agriculture and manufacturing, the economic landscape will transform, potentially lowering prices across the board,” he stated on the company’s website.
