Landmark Lease Agreement Paves the Way for Modern Arena in Nairobi
In a significant development for Kenya’s urban landscape and economic growth, NBA champion Masai Ujiri’s Zaria Group has formalized a long-term lease agreement with the Kenya Railways Corporation for the creation of a state-of-the-art indoor arena and a mixed-use entertainment district. This agreement marks a pivotal step in enhancing Nairobi’s stature as a hub for sport, entertainment, culture, and commerce in East Africa.
The agreement, signed in the presence of His Excellency Dr. William Samoyei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, sets the groundwork for an innovative mixed-use precinct at the heart of the capital. The planned facility aims to transform the city into a leading destination for both local and international events, significantly boosting the economy.
At the center of this development is a cutting-edge multipurpose arena designed to host a wide range of international sports events, concerts, conferences, and cultural exhibitions. Notably, the project is anticipated to generate over 25,000 jobs annually across various sectors, including construction, operations, hospitality, retail, and the wider creative economy.
This landmark agreement reflects a collaborative vision between public and private entities aimed at maximizing the potential of Nairobi Railway City as a means for sustainable growth. It represents a critical advancement toward establishing Nairobi as a globally competitive city through strategic infrastructure investments.
By revitalizing strategically located land, the project is poised to foster job creation, stimulate investment, and develop infrastructure that will endure for generations. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s national infrastructure goals and adheres to the existing Nairobi Railway City Master Plan, emphasizing a designated MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) core to enhance the central business district’s connectivity and overall economic productivity.
Zaria Group, an enterprise focusing on sports, entertainment, and cultural precincts across Africa, will spearhead the development and long-term management of the project. The company’s approach, centered on arena-led urban development, has been effectively demonstrated in Kigali through its management of the recently constructed BK Arena, Amahoro Stadium, and Zaria Court precinct, with ambitions now extended to key markets throughout the continent.
Masai Ujiri, co-founder of Zaria Group, emphasized the importance of this investment by stating that enhancing Kenya’s sports and entertainment infrastructure is as crucial as developing ports and airports for economic progression. The project aspires to create a platform for talent discovery, opportunity creation, and a connection between Africa and the global stage. This initiative represents a model the company hopes to replicate across Africa, addressing a broader strategic shift that regards sport and entertainment as vital economic infrastructure capable of generating sustainable jobs, attracting prestigious events, and driving urban regeneration.
In addition to the arena, the precinct will encompass hospitality, retail, public spaces, and cultural venues, designed to function as a continuous economic engine. This comprehensive vision aims to invigorate Kenya’s creative industries, providing essential infrastructure to empower artists, athletes, promoters, and entrepreneurs to flourish.
