The inaugural international service from this new airport will facilitate the airlifting of Muslim pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. In anticipation of its first international flight, Governor Abiodun has initiated high-level discussions with crucial federal agencies responsible for overseeing the commencement of international operations. These consultations aim to ensure compliance with all regulatory, operational, and security requirements before the airport begins welcoming international passengers.
Security Framework to Ensure Smooth Operations
Key agencies involved in this process include the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Customs Service, and the National Narcotics Law Enforcement Agency, among others. To oversee these engagements, Colonel Dapo Olumide, an aviation consultant and the responsible manager of Gateway International Airport, has been appointed to facilitate coordination with relevant agencies.
Infrastructure and Capacity Readiness
During a recent meeting held at the airport, representatives from various security agencies reviewed existing facilities and outlined operational needs for the upcoming Hajj operations. Ogun State Transport Commissioner Gbenga Dairo affirmed that the airport is equipped with the necessary infrastructure and management capabilities to handle Hajj flights, having already received certification from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
