New Faces Join Super Eagles for Upcoming Friendlies
Three players have received their first call-ups to join the Super Eagles: Scotland-based defender Emmanuel Fernandes, Germany-based forward Philippe Otele, and KRC Genk winger Ira Sol. They will participate in international friendlies against Jordan and Iran this month, marking an exciting opportunity for these newcomers to showcase their talents on the global stage.
Philippe Otele’s Journey in European Football
Philippe Otele, who joined Hamburger SV from FC Basel during the winter transfer window, is eager to make his mark. Previously included in Nigeria’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, he did not make the final roster at that time. However, he now has a chance to prove himself in upcoming friendly matches, which could pave the way for a competitive debut.
Since his transfer, Otele has started in five out of seven possible Bundesliga matches, contributing one assist. Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, he balanced his educational pursuits with football in his formative years, even training briefly with Arsenal FC as a teenager. After studying at Teesside University, Otele played for Wolviston FC from 2017 to 2019, laying the groundwork for his professional career.
The 26-year-old first gained prominence in Lithuania with Kauno Zalgiris before moving on to UTA Arad. His subsequent performances attracted attention at CFR Cluj, where he shared the honor of being the league’s top scorer for the 2023/24 season with 18 goals. Following a short stint at Al Wahda FC, Otele returned to Europe, joining Basel and helping the club secure the Swiss League title before his transfer to Hamburg in January. Known for his speed and versatility, he can excel as either a winger or a striker.
Emmanuel Fernandes Steps Up
Emmanuel Fernandes, a highly regarded young centre-back, has made a significant impact since joining Rangers FC from Peterborough United in a deal reportedly worth €2.9 million. In his impressive debut season, he quickly became integral to the team’s setup under manager Danny Rohr, scoring six goals in 26 appearances this season alone. His market value has surged to €9 million according to Transfermarkt, reflecting his rapid ascent in European football.
At 24, Fernandes is expected to bolster the Super Eagles’ defense, which combines seasoned veterans with emerging talents. He wears the number 37 in tribute to his older brother, who passed away at that age, and he is the youngest of eight siblings. Before his time at Rangers, he contributed to Barnet FC and Peterborough United, amassing a total of 15 goals in 71 career appearances, which highlights his prowess as a goal-scoring defender.
If given the opportunity to debut, Fernandes would join a select group of players, including Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey, who made their Super Eagles debuts while at Rangers.
Ira Sol’s Return to the National Stage
Ira Sol, though new to the Super Eagles, is not entirely a stranger to the national setup. The 25-year-old was part of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles squad at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, where he participated in two matches before the team was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Senegal. His football journey began at Family Love Academy in Port Harcourt before he moved to 36 Lion in Lagos.
Sol signed with Czech club Baník Ostrava in February 2021 and quickly attracted attention. In January 2022, he joined Slavia Prague on a contract until December 2026, where he made an immediate impact by scoring two goals in a UEFA Europa Conference League match against Fenerbahce SK. His ability to deliver in high-stakes games caught the eyes of scouts, leading to a transfer to KRC Genk in December 2022, where he has since played 23 league games, netting four goals and providing one assist this season.
Upcoming Fixtures Against Iran and Jordan
The Super Eagles will face Iran, who are headed to the World Cup, on March 27, followed by a match against Jordan four days later. Both fixtures will take place in Antalya, a change in venue prompted by escalating tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. These games present a crucial opportunity for the new players to establish themselves as part of the national squad’s fabric as Nigeria looks to strengthen its footballing prospects on an international level.
