Party Leaders Call for Unity and Integrity in the PDP
Senior officials from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are urging the newly elected leadership to adopt an inclusive approach, focusing on unity and the restoration of the party’s integrity. During a recent national convention held in Abuja, key figures expressed that the current state of the party is in need of urgent reform.
Concerns Over Internal Democracy and Division
Prominent attendees at the convention, including Bukola Saraki and Sule Lamido, reflected on the challenges faced by the PDP since the 2021 election convention. They pointed out that the party has struggled with maintaining internal democracy, which has resulted in ongoing conflicts and divisions among members.
Independent Electoral Commission’s Representation
The party conference was notably attended by representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including Sani Adams and Ken Ukeagu. Other participants included INEC’s EPM Director Joan Arabus and Legal Director Rakiya Nauzo, who provided support throughout the proceedings.
Thematic Focus on Future Growth
Okezie Ikpeazu, former Governor of Abia State, emphasized the importance of a forward-looking theme for the PDP, which is “Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal.” He remarked that this theme is a strategic necessity rather than merely a slogan, urging party members to unite and rebuild trust to strengthen the foundation of democratic governance in Nigeria.
Encouragement for Reconciliation Efforts
During the event, Bukola Saraki highlighted the need for ongoing reconciliation among rival factions within the party. He emphasized that success in these efforts is crucial for the stability and growth of the PDP, urging the new executive not to derail the reconciliation initiatives already in progress.
Past Leadership Accountability
Sule Lamido also weighed in on the issues, attributing the current state of the party to past leadership decisions that sidelined certain members. He expressed gratitude to the Abuja Court of Appeal for providing guidance during this tumultuous period, asserting that unity among party stakeholders is fundamental as they approach the crucial task of forming a new National Working Committee (NWC).
A Call to Action for Upcoming Leadership
As the PDP prepares for the next four years of political activity, leaders are emphasizing the need for collaboration and party unity. With significant changes on the horizon, members are being encouraged to come together as a cohesive political family, dedicated to renewing the party’s commitment to democratic principles.
