Participants Share Mixed Reviews at Enugu International Trade Fair
The 37th Enugu International Trade Fair has elicited a range of reactions from participants, with some voicing concerns about low attendance and others commending the efforts of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture. While a number of exhibitors lamented the turnout of both participants and visitors, several praised the organization’s initiatives and overall performance.
Economic Decline Influences Attendance
Participants pointed to recent fuel price increases as a major factor contributing to the subdued turnout. This surge in fuel costs has not only impacted consumer behavior but has also been a significant factor in the overall economic decline affecting businesses in the region. Conversely, those who noted the successes of the trade fair highlighted the resilience displayed by Nigerian businesses, showcasing their ability to adapt even amid challenging economic conditions.
Individual Experiences Highlight Diverse Perspectives
Caleb Ezenwa from the Ekuru Group expressed satisfaction with the opportunity to showcase his cosmetics line at the fair, although he noted a decline in attendance compared to previous years. Friday Olabisi, a textile dealer, acknowledged the organization of the event, while suggesting that more aggressive marketing could enhance future fairs. He emphasized that effective advertising through various media could cultivate a stronger audience and attract greater participation in upcoming events.
Shoppers Appreciate Enhanced Experience
Attendees like Uchechukwu Ikegwuonwu found shopping at the trade fair to be more enjoyable than traditional market experiences. She commended the Chamber for creating a comfortable atmosphere, particularly with the introduction of a new 3,000 square meter air-conditioned tent, which greatly improved the shopping experience. Solomon Ani remarked on the value of interacting with manufacturers and exploring innovative products at the fair, indicating that such opportunities were beneficial for all involved.
Sales Results Defy Attendance Expectations
John Udekwe, a dealer in body sprays and perfumes, reported that although initial attendance figures were disappointing, his company still managed to achieve respectable sales. This highlights the potential for businesses to thrive even when general attendance lags.
Chamber of Commerce Addresses Attendee Concerns
Uche Mba, Secretary-General of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged that current socio-economic challenges had influenced attendance. He noted that several companies that had announced participation ultimately withdrew, citing the burden of rising petroleum costs as their primary concern. Despite this, Mba asserted that this year’s event represented an improvement over last year’s fair, introducing new features such as free business classes for youth and start-ups, daily lottery draws, and complimentary transportation services that contributed to a more dynamic atmosphere.
Fair Extended to Meet Demand
The fair was initially scheduled to run from March 21 for ten days but was extended by two days following requests from exhibitors eager for additional selling days in anticipation of the Easter festivities. The theme for this year’s event was “Strengthening MSMEs to Increase Global Competitiveness,” reflecting the ongoing commitment to enhance the capabilities and global presence of small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. However, challenges such as power outages and soaring diesel costs for generators highlighted the difficulties faced during the event.
