Roblox Introduces Age-Appropriate Accounts for Minors
Roblox announced on Monday its plan to launch age-specific accounts for minors, enhancing safety features on its widely popular gaming platform.
New Account Options Tailored for Different Age Groups
Beginning in early June, users aged 5 to 8 will receive Roblox Kids accounts. These accounts will come with messaging functionalities disabled by default and will restrict access to games with content maturity ratings classified as “minimal” or “mild.” Users between the ages of 9 and 15 will be assigned Roblox Select accounts, which will gradually introduce chat features and allow access to games with up to a “medium” content maturity label.
Addressing Growing Safety Concerns
This initiative is part of a broader series of safety updates aimed at enhancing the protective measures for Roblox, the world’s largest children-centric social gaming platform with over 151 million daily active users. As concerns mount regarding the platform’s efficacy in safeguarding young users from predators and inappropriate content, Roblox is facing increasing scrutiny and legal challenges.
Legal Challenges Amid Concerns Over Child Safety
Roblox has been sued by at least seven states over child safety issues, with additional states investigating potential legal actions. Furthermore, the company is embroiled in numerous lawsuits that have been consolidated into a multidistrict case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, reflecting a growing concern over allegations that children have been groomed on the platform.
Recent Developments in Age Verification Measures
The introduction of age-specific accounts builds on Roblox’s earlier biometric age verification measures, which require all users to undergo a process aimed at estimating their age before they can access chat functionalities. However, this has led to complaints regarding the accuracy of age estimates and the discovery of workarounds by users attempting to bypass the system.
Parental Controls and Enhanced Features
As Roblox prepares to roll out Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, the company stated that age settings can be managed through linked parent accounts or the platform’s own age verification tools. Once users reach the age of 16, they will transition to a standard Roblox account, granting full access to all content and chat features.
Strengthening Parental Authority and Game Selection Process
Roblox is enhancing its parental control features, allowing parents to manage direct chat settings and block specific games up to the age of 15, previously set at 13. The platform continues to refine its selection of available games for users under 16 via a process that includes developer verification and content maturity assessments.
Transitioning to International Rating Standards
Later this year, Roblox will also begin adopting the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework, a globally recognized content rating standard for digital games and apps. This transition aims to provide clear region-specific ratings that reflect local cultural norms while aligning with global safety standards and regulations.
