Harry Maguire Commends Ruben Amorim’s Impact at Manchester United
Harry Maguire has expressed his admiration for former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, highlighting the Portuguese’s innovative ideas and the positive trajectory the club has taken since his departure.
Amorim was relieved of his duties in early January, leading to Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick stepping in as interim managers. Carrick’s leadership has notably revitalized the team’s performance, culminating in their qualification for this season’s Champions League.
The defender has lauded Carrick’s successful adjustment of the team’s tactics, specifically the seamless transition from a back three to a back four, a formation that struggled under Amorim’s management.
Maguire acknowledged the challenges Amorim faced, stating that while things didn’t pan out as hoped at Manchester United, he holds a great deal of respect for him. “I think he has great ideas, ideas that didn’t work at Manchester United. I believe he will continue to have a great career and probably go on to win many matches at his next club.”
Maguire believes that the players also share responsibility for the team’s previous struggles under Amorim. He commended the way Amorim laid the groundwork for a solid squad, stating, “He has led the club in a certain direction and I think he deserves credit for that.”
With Carrick at the helm, the transition to a back four has enabled Maguire to play a more attacking style, contributing to the resurgence of midfielder Koby Mainu. The 20-year-old has been recalled to the England squad after an 18-month absence, a turnaround that has sparked newfound optimism regarding his World Cup aspirations.
Maguire voiced confidence in Mainu’s potential for growth, noting his resilience through challenges in his young career. “He’s been through a lot and is probably thinking, ‘I’ve got to go out and play.’ This is a great opportunity for him as he makes a bid for a World Cup spot.”
On the contractual front, Maguire is optimistic about negotiating a new deal with United, emphasizing that his decision should not be driven solely by sentiment. The veteran defender has been a mainstay in the squad since Carrick took over, helping the team rise to third place in the Premier League and earning him a return to international duties.
As the uncertainty surrounding his contract continues, Maguire remarked, “I think there have been negotiations. We will reach an agreement that benefits both the club and myself.” He reassured fans that a resolution is expected in the near future, reinforcing his commitment to the club’s ambitions.
While he is focused on securing his place at United, Maguire also faces scrutiny regarding his international career. Preparing for a crucial training camp in March, he recognized the importance of his recent form, which has revitalized his chances of contributing to England’s World Cup campaign. “I played quite a few games for England and then, all of a sudden, when it’s taken away from you, it hurts,” he explained, reflecting on his absence from the national team during a successful qualifying period. “If I hadn’t attended this camp, I don’t think I would have been able to get back into the England setup.”
