Tributes Paid to Late Journalist Sirijo Dalhatu Sifawa
Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, delivered a heartfelt tribute on Monday to honor the memory of Sirijo Dalhatu Sifawa, a notable journalist and Sokoto National Broadcasting Officer. He emphasized that Sifawa’s life exemplified purpose and commitment, marking him as a figure worthy of admiration.
The Sultan noted that Sifawa’s unwavering dedication to humanity and the journalism profession has left an indelible legacy. He urged fellow media professionals to remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and ethical journalism, highlighting the lasting impact of the deceased’s work.
Describing Sifawa as a consummate professional, the Sultan underscored the significance of his contributions to journalism, asserting that his influence will be forever remembered. “He was a prolific journalist whose positive impact on the profession remains unmistakable,” he stated.
Represented by Gagi District Mayor Alhaji Sani Umaru Jabi, the Sultan spoke at the unveiling of a media gallery dedicated to Sifawa’s memory, established by the Sokoto Professional Network (SPN).
Former Nigerian Ambassador to Jordan, Faruk Malami Yabo, echoed the sentiments of loss expressed by others, describing Sifawa as not only a colleague but also a trusted friend and brother. His absence, he said, resonates deeply within the community.
At the event, SPN Chairman Engr. Zaiyanu Tambari Yabo articulated Sifawa’s pivotal role in enhancing the organization’s profile and credibility. He lauded the journalist’s professionalism, efficiency, and dedication, asserting that honoring his memory serves as a meaningful acknowledgment of his contributions.
Additionally, Mr. Yabo announced the initiation of a fund to support Sifawa’s family, revealing that nearly one million naira has already been raised. He called on colleagues and well-wishers to continue contributing to this effort.
Alhaji Usman Mohammed Binji, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), praised Sifawa as a trailblazer who transformed news broadcasting at Lima TV. He noted that Sifawa’s leadership and mentorship have left a significant void in the media landscape.
Dr. Nurudeen Abubakar Muhammad, Executive Vice-Chairman of SPN and Coordinator of the Commemoration Committee, described Sifawa as an exemplary journalist and dedicated professional. His commitment to journalism, according to Muhammad, is a benchmark for aspiring reporters.
Mr. Labalan Rumo Dandai, Managing Director of Sokoto State Media Limited, represented by Lima Television News Director Malam Shehu Garba, expressed that Sifawa’s passing has left a gap that will be challenging to fill. Various attendees, including prominent figures such as Mallam Kabiru Asada and Professor Nentaweh Yurwatoda, also paid tribute, reflecting on Sifawa’s impact and accomplishments.
In a touching moment, Hafsat Silajo Sifawa, the late journalist’s daughter, expressed her appreciation to SPN for their efforts. She depicted her father as a devoted and humble journalist, as well as a compassionate family man. The gathering attracted numerous dignitaries honoring Sifawa’s legacy, emphasizing the profound loss felt by the community.
Mr. Sifawa passed away on January 14, 2026, following a brief illness. At the time of his death, he served as the news editor at Lima Television and held key positions in public relations and stakeholder engagement at SPN. He was also an active member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
