Survey Reveals Widespread Opposition to VAR Among Premier League Fans
A recent survey conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association indicates that a significant majority of Premier League fans, approximately 75%, oppose the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The poll, which engaged nearly 8,000 supporters—more than half of whom regularly attend at least 15 home games per season—examined fans’ sentiments towards the controversial technology.
The Unpopularity of VAR
The findings underscore the discontent surrounding VAR, with over 97% of respondents disagreeing that it enhances the enjoyment of watching football. Additionally, more than 90% of fans felt that VAR diminishes the overall match experience. When asked about their support for the continued use of VAR, a substantial 75.71% indicated they were against it, while over 70% expressed doubts about its effectiveness in improving the accuracy of officiating decisions.
Timing Frustrations Persist
The delayed decision-making process remains a principal source of frustration among fans. Less than 3% of participants believe that VAR decisions are made in a timely manner. Many respondents felt that despite ongoing efforts to expedite the process, they do not perceive any significant improvements in decision speed.
Impact on Goal Celebrations
Moreover, over 90% of fans surveyed reported that technology has diminished the joy associated with celebrating goals. The recent introduction of in-game announcements to clarify VAR decisions has garnered support from more than half of the fans, yet dissatisfaction regarding the overall communication remains prevalent.
Mixed Opinions on VAR Applications
While some respondents supported the use of VAR for reviewing red cards, there was considerable opposition to its application for offside, fouls, and handballs leading to goals. Interestingly, goal-line technology emerged as the only aspect of VAR that received overwhelming approval, with over 93% of supporters in favor.
Concerns Over VAR Expansion
The Premier League is planning to consult clubs on potentially broadening VAR’s scope to include corner signings next season. This initiative arises in the context of survey results showing that more than 85% of fans harbor concerns regarding such an expansion. Should this change be approved, it is unlikely to be met with enthusiasm, as over 70% of respondents are opposed to it.
FSA Expresses Concerns About VAR’s Impact
Thomas Concannon, Premier League Network Manager at the FSA, highlighted that the recent findings align closely with the association’s previous 2021 survey, indicating persistent concerns about VAR’s introduction. He noted, “Fans continue to report a loss of spontaneity in goal celebrations and a deteriorating match experience.” The findings have been shared with the Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials Limited, and discussions regarding the survey results are anticipated.

A Premier League spokesperson acknowledged the necessity of minimizing VAR’s impact on the supporter experience while emphasizing that the technology contributes to more accurate officiating. They cited approximately 100 correct VAR overturns per season, addressing issues where goals were wrongly awarded or denied, alongside missed or misapplied red cards and penalties. The spokesperson also mentioned ongoing dialogue with supporters, indicating general fan favor toward retaining VAR but with a desire for improved implementation.
