Local Governments Vital for Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Development
Simon Lalong, the former Governor of Plateau State and current Senator representing the Plateau South Senatorial District, underscored the essential role of local governments in fostering socio-economic development in Nigeria. Speaking during the inauguration of the new leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Abuja, Lalong was named the organization’s patron.
ALGON’s Commitment to National Development
Hon. Ilyasu Zakari, the Acting National Chairman of ALGON, emphasized that the association will actively promote President Bola Tinubu’s “New Hope” agenda across all 774 local governments in the country. Zakari’s commitment signals a concerted effort to align local governance with national policies aimed at spurring development.
The Importance of Grassroots Governance
Lalong asserted that progress at the national level hinges on a robust and empowered local government system. He articulated that effective governance rooted in local communities is vital for impactful development across key sectors, including infrastructure, health, education, and agriculture. “Local governments are integral to national progress,” he remarked. “Without governance at this level, meaningful advancement becomes unachievable.”
Support for Local Government Autonomy
The former governor praised President Tinubu for his unwavering support for local government autonomy, highlighting its necessity for deepening democracy and enhancing service delivery. He noted that Tinubu’s efforts to fortify the third-tier government predate his presidency and are evident in the recent policy initiatives aimed at revitalizing local governance.
Constitutional Reforms in Focus
Lalong revealed that the National Assembly is actively addressing constitutional challenges surrounding local autonomy through a revision process. He expressed confidence that this endeavor would lead to significant reforms empowering local councils. “The constitutional reform process is underway, and these issues are being prioritized. Soon, Nigerians will witness the benefits of these efforts towards bolstering grassroots governance,” he stated.
Collaboration Across Government Levels
He urged local government leaders to expand their roles by actively endorsing federal policies in their regions. Lalong stressed the necessity for synergy between federal, state, and local authorities to ensure effective implementation of development initiatives throughout Nigeria.
A New Era for ALGON
Zakari, who also serves as the Chairman of the Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, described his appointment as a pivotal moment for ALGON. He affirmed that the new leadership will enhance collaboration with prominent stakeholders, particularly the Nigeria Governors Forum, to ensure that federal policies translate into tangible benefits for local communities. “We are committed to making the New Hope Agenda a reality in every ward and local government across Nigeria,” he affirmed.
Building a Unified ALGON
Hon. Shaban Ohinoyi, the Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Directors, characterized the launch as a transformative milestone for the association. He emphasized that the new unity within ALGON positions it to effectively contribute to national development and support federal initiatives. “Today, we are ready to evolve and make a meaningful impact at the grassroots level, where governance directly influences the lives of citizens,” Ohinoyi stated.
The event marked a significant step for ALGON as it looks to redefine its function within Nigeria’s governance framework. Stakeholders expressed optimism that a fortified local government system can accelerate developmental outcomes, with a renewed focus on grassroots initiatives and the collaboration necessary for sustainable national growth.
