President Tinubu Celebrates Otunba Gbenga Daniel on His 70th Birthday
President Bola Tinubu has expressed heartfelt congratulations to former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a close friend and ally, as he marks his landmark 70th birthday. In a birthday address released on Monday, the president commended Daniel’s extensive professional accomplishments, governance initiatives, and political contributions.
In his ten-paragraph tribute, President Tinubu highlighted Daniel’s remarkable career and personal attributes. “Today, I congratulate Senator Gbenga Daniel, a distinguished technologist, entrepreneur, prominent politician, and friend, as he celebrates his 70th birthday on April 6, 2026,” he stated. The president acknowledged Daniel’s hard work, determination, and wisdom as key factors in his success, stating that he has carved out a significant niche for himself nationally and is recognized for his contributions to Nigeria.
Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s strong moral upbringing played a vital role in shaping him. Born into a devout Christian family, his father was a notable missionary of the Lord’s Church. This foundation prepared Daniel well for the challenges he has faced throughout his life.
Following his academic and professional training, Daniel founded Cresta Laurel, an electromechanical engineering company, in 1990. The company’s notable achievements, particularly in elevator installation and maintenance, reflect his keen business insights and relentless ambition. Under his leadership, Cresta Laurel has undertaken significant engineering projects, establishing itself as a leader in its sector in Nigeria.
Daniel’s foray into politics began with his election as the governor of Ogun State in 2003, marking a significant milestone in his career. His administration emphasized innovation and aimed to leave a lasting legacy focused on industrialization, public-private partnerships, education, and infrastructure development. One of his notable accomplishments as governor was the establishment of Nigeria’s first cargo airport under the Agro Alliance. He continued to serve the state, being elected as a senator for Ogun East in 2013.
The close professional bond between Tinubu and Daniel has been evident throughout their careers. Tinubu recalled how Daniel played a crucial role in securing his election victory and facilitating a smooth transition of power when he became governor of Lagos State in 1999. Furthermore, Daniel’s mobilization of the Heritage Group of Yoruba experts to support Tinubu’s election underscores their strong collaborative efforts.
President Tinubu also took a moment to recognize Daniel’s political evolution, praising his progressive stance. Initially associated with the Democratic Party, Daniel later joined the Peoples Democratic Party, where he was elected governor in 2003. Tinubu expressed his satisfaction with Daniel’s return to the progressive fold, noting that he now serves as a pivotal leader within the All Progressives Congress.
