Hovland Reflects on Ryder Cup Injury and Captains Future
Viktor Hovland described the injury he sustained during the Ryder Cup as a “dark cloud” hovering over Team Europe’s recent victory, while expressing enthusiasm for Luke Donald’s continued leadership as they aim for a third consecutive title in 2027.
Hovland was sidelined for the Sunday singles at Bethpage Black in September due to a persistent neck injury that had troubled him since the summer months.
He initially sought treatment during the morning Foursomes match but ended up missing the afternoon session, prompting team captain Luke Donald to replace him with Tyrrell Hatton.
The absence of Hovland meant that both teams received 0.5 points, as the USA had to forfeit a designated player due to the envelope rule affecting Harris English.
Reflecting on the experience in a recent interview with Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Hovland shared, “It was tough. The most important thing is that we won; this is a team event and we achieved our goal.” He acknowledged the complexity of his situation, noting, “While I was disappointed, it was difficult for Harris as well.”
Hovland continued, “Competing on Thursday and Friday felt overshadowed by my injury. Despite our team’s impressive performance at Bethpage, the issues surrounding my withdrawal affected my overall experience and left me feeling disheartened.”
Europe triumphed 15-13, marking the first time an away team has won at the Ryder Cup since 2012, overcoming the challenges of a passionate New York crowd.
Donald to Continue as Ryder Cup Captain
This victory marked Donald’s second win as captain, and he has confirmed he will continue in this role as Europe aims to defend their title at Adare Manor in County Limerick next year.
Hovland expressed excitement over Donald’s decision to remain captain, stating, “He informed us just before the announcement, and we were all thrilled. He has done a phenomenal job in his previous two Ryder Cups, fully dedicating himself to the role.”
He praised Donald’s leadership style, emphasizing, “The execution and flow of his captaincy have been flawless. We are excited to support him in his pursuit of a third victory at Adare Manor.”
Fans can look forward to watching the Masters live on Sky Sports from April 9 to 12, while the next PGA Tour event, the Texas Children’s Houston Open, will be broadcast live on Sports Golf Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
