Influencers Discover a New Frontier for Viral Content
Thousands of miles from Florida, a new wave of content creators has found a unique opportunity for virality on Little St. James, the private island formerly owned by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
A Rising Tide of Content Creation
One by one, influencers are flocking to Little St. James, capitalizing on the renewed interest stemming from the recent release of Epstein-related documents by the Justice Department. These documents, which contain partially redacted details from the investigation into Epstein’s activities, have sparked a surge in public curiosity. Epstein died by suicide in his prison cell in August 2019, while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Noteworthy Video Trends
An NBC News review of over a dozen YouTube videos featuring expeditions to Little St. James revealed that nine were uploaded this year alone, often within days of each other. Collectively, these videos have garnered more than 52 million views, showcasing a growing trend of explorers documenting their visits to the island.
Typical Journey to the Island
Content creators typically begin their journey by flying into St. Thomas, the nearest island with an airport. Upon arrival, they engage with local residents to gather insights and rumors about Little St. James, enhancing the narrative of their videos. Activities often include renting jet skis or snorkeling gear to explore the island’s coast, sometimes even flying drones for aerial footage.
Controversial Legality of Visits
It’s important to note that these visits may not have the authorization of the island’s current owner, billionaire Stephen Deckoff. In 2023, Deckoff purchased Little St. James along with a nearby island for $60 million, with plans to develop a luxury resort. As of March 2026, no development plans have been submitted to the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
Ben Rishi, a YouTuber who attempted to visit the island in February, decided against it due to potential legal issues. “The island is now owned by new people…they obviously wanted to respect that,” he remarked. Yet, not all content creators are deterred. Ahmad Aboulob, another YouTuber, shared his experience of stepping onto the island, which has amassed over 15 million views. He stated that the video was primed for virality given the current interest surrounding Epstein.
The Surge of Interest Following Document Releases
The release of new Epstein files has significantly spiked public interest. Google Trends data indicates searches for phrases like “Little St. James Island” and “Epstein Island” reached peak levels in February. Aboulob noted that the trend prompted many YouTubers to document their visits immediately. He was particularly inspired by earlier videos from fellow creators, illustrating a blend of curiosity and opportunism in content creation.
Amidst the mix of manufactured drama and genuine intrigue, Aboulob emphasized the need for captivating storytelling in the world of online content creation. As interest grows and more content creators converge on the island, Little St. James transforms from a site of controversy into a new mecca for digital storytellers.
