McIlroy Credits Mickelson for Masters Breakthrough
Rory McIlroy has opened up about how a conversation with Phil Mickelson, nearly 15 years ago, played a pivotal role in transforming his fortunes at the Masters. In April, McIlroy secured his first green jacket by defeating Justin Rose in a playoff, making history as the sixth male golfer and the first European to achieve a career Grand Slam.
The encounter with Mickelson during a past practice round fundamentally reshaped McIlroy’s mindset towards the iconic Augusta National course. For years, McIlroy had struggled with the challenges presented by the course, but Mickelson’s advice ignited a shift in his approach.
Reflecting on his experiences, McIlroy noted, “Over the years, Augusta has made me more cautious, especially in my approach. Once you become tentative, you start to find yourself in difficult positions, making it hard to recover.” Mickelson had instilled a confident attitude in McIlroy, suggesting the advantages of being aggressive on the course.
McIlroy recalled his earlier confusion regarding Mickelson’s perspective: “I always thought, ‘What does he mean?’ I felt I couldn’t be proactive due to the numerous trouble spots lurking around every hole.” In contrast, Mickelson’s confidence in his short game allowed him to play aggressively, knowing he could recover if he missed the mark.
With improved confidence in his short game and putting skills, McIlroy gradually became more assertive in his approach. He described these enhancements as instrumental in his latest victory and crucial for improving his performance at the Masters over the years.
After clinching the title, McIlroy described the morning after as a surreal experience. He shared, “I had to wake up and check if it wasn’t a dream. Unlike my previous experience of feeling empty after becoming world number one, this time, I felt incredibly grateful for everything that has happened.”
Despite dealing with a back injury before last week’s Players Championship, McIlroy has reported positive progress in his fitness. “I’m pleased with how my body reacted to that setback,” he said, confirming plans for further training ahead of another trip to Augusta National.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming Masters, McIlroy is set to showcase his enhanced skills on the course once again. Coverage of the opening round begins April 9th, exclusively on Sky Sports.
