Governor Apologizes to Igbo Community for Civil War Involvement
Caleb Muthofan, the Governor of Plateau State, has expressed his regret to the Igbo community regarding the state’s past involvement in Nigeria’s civil war. He described the conflict as a situation where local residents were “deceived” into participating.
Call for Unity and Reconciliation
During a recent dialogue with Igbo leaders from the 17 local government areas, held at the Little Rayfield Government House in Jos, Muthofan urged all parties to set aside historical grievances and work towards rebuilding unity. He emphasized the importance of moving forward and nurturing familial ties among diverse ethnic groups.
Recognizing Igbo Contributions to Development
Praising the significant contributions of the Igbo people to Plateau State’s socio-economic landscape, the governor highlighted their integral role in the region’s growth and prosperity. He remarked that Plateau has consistently been a welcoming state for the Igbo community since the end of the civil war, noting that the government has compensated some losses from that turbulent era.
Encouragement for Igbo Entrepreneurs
Muthofan appealed directly to Igbo entrepreneurs in Plateau State, encouraging them to invest in local businesses and create mentorship opportunities for the youth. He recognized the entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbo as unparalleled in Nigeria and urged them to foster the same vigor within Plateau.
Igbo Community’s Endorsement for the Governor
Leaders of the Igbo community officially endorsed Muthofan for a second term in the 2027 gubernatorial election, commending his inclusive leadership, resource management, and commitment to harmony among diverse ethnic groups. Chidi Ona, Chairman of the Igbo community in Plateau, cited the governor’s integrity and competency as key factors in this endorsement.
Support Based on Performance, Not Affiliation
Former Chairman of the Igbo Community Association, Mike Okunonke, emphasized that the community’s backing of Muthofan stems from his achievements rather than political affiliations. He highlighted the governor’s ability to create job opportunities and reduce unemployment, underscoring their commitment to mobilizing support across all local governments.
A Commitment to Peace and Development
Special Assistant on Igbo Affairs, Barr. Jonah Okechukwu Ezekwueme, praised Muthofan for fostering an enabling environment for the Igbo community. Meanwhile, community leaders expressed their ambition to collaborate with the state government to establish job and business opportunities for the youth. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment from both the Plateau State Government and the Igbo community to promote peaceful coexistence and sustainable development throughout the region.
